Fabrizio Romano: Manchester Utd and Arsenal chase prolific star amidst ongoing standoff

Manchester United and Arsenal are engaged in a transfer tussle for Viktor Gyökeres

Manchester United may remain silent publicly, but their interest in Viktor Gyökeres is anything but dormant. Despite the lack of official movement from Old Trafford, the club continues to monitor the Swedish striker closely. After a sensational season with Sporting CP, Gyökeres has firmly established himself as one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe. Arsenal are also tracking him, although their pursuit of Benjamin Šeško appears to be more advanced. Still, Gyökeres remains at the centre of the transfer storm in Portugal, his goalscoring exploits and commanding presence ensuring his name never strays far from the headlines.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have yet to open formal negotiations, but they are watching developments carefully. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano also outlined the tension between Gyökeres and Sporting, with the Portuguese club open to selling but holding firm on their valuation.

Sporting are unlikely to accept anything below €60 million. While the striker’s tally of 54 goals in 52 appearances are nothing short of staggering, his price tag has sparked internal debates. The club may understand the difficulty in receiving the full release clause but still aim to extract maximum value. Arsenal, meanwhile, have kept communication open and have not ruled out a move.

Should United go all in for Gyökeres? If the club is serious about securing a proven No. 9 with power, work rate, and a relentless eye for goal, there are few better fits on the market. His performances in Portugal show that he is not just in form, he’s in the peak of his career.

This would not be a speculative investment in potential; it would be a statement signing for the present. And in today’s market, where inflated prices are paid for strikers with far less output, spending over €60 million for a forward who delivers consistent, elite-level returns is not an extravagance. It’s a necessity for any team that wants to compete at the highest level.

The ongoing tension between Gyökeres and Sporting could ultimately work in Manchester United’s favour. If the striker continues to push for a move and Sporting realise they’re unlikely to receive the full value of his release clause, United may find leverage to negotiate a more favourable deal. Time will be a critical factor, if the player maintains pressure and potential buyers hold their ground, Sporting could be forced to compromise. Still, they won’t surrender easily. Gyökeres’ incredible form justifies a premium, albeit not an unmanageable one. In this scenario, both Arsenal and United will need to act decisively. The Swede won’t wait until the final days of the window.

In my view, United must take the initiative. The club cannot afford to remain passive while direct competitors strengthen their squads. Gyökeres is a complete striker, in peak form, physically dominant, and capable of unsettling defences on his own. He combines aggression, sharp instincts, and relentless drive. Given his output, the asking price is far from excessive. In fact, if Sporting soften their stance, he could end up costing less than other strikers with inferior records. Failing to sign him and watching him thrive at Arsenal would only echo past missteps. United must act now, or risk letting another crucial opportunity slip away.
