Father of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson tragically drowns

The father of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson tragically drowned in a lake near his holiday home in southern Brazil on Wednesday.

Per an ESPN story, Jose Becker was declared missing around 5 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The body of the 57-year-old was recovered near midnight, and it's believed no foul play was involved in his passing.

While with Liverpool, Alisson has earned FIFA Best Men's Goalkeeper honors in 2019 and has also hoisted the Champions League, Premier League, and FIFA Club World Cup trophies. The English side released a brief statement on Thursday:

"The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Alisson and the Becker family at this incredibly sad and difficult time," Liverpool said. "The club requests that the media respects the privacy of Alisson and his family during this time."

According to Kevin Palmer of TeamTalk, Alisson will miss his father's funeral because of travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Weeks ago, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp missed his mother's funeral held in Germany for similar reasons.

Liverpool next play Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in a league fixture on Sunday evening local time. It's unclear if Alisson will be available for that match.
