After a painful defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona needed to regain its footing in the Champions League and remind people that they weren’t to be dismissed. They could do so by playing a good game against the Greek Olympiacos. With the game they played, it’s safe to say that the team managed to achieve their goal.

The First Half: Fermin’s Playground

Despite not being the favorites coming into the game, Olympiacos started the match strongly. They pressed Barcelona from the very first minute and even got an early shot at Wojciech Szczęsny’s goal. Their efforts were commendable, but not enough to open the score.

That honor went to Barcelona in just the sixth minute. It was then that Fermin Lopez began an attack and passed the ball to the well-positioned Lamine Yamal. The talented youngster tried to dribble in the penalty box, but was stopped by Olympiacos’ goalkeeper. The ball found its way back to the man who started it all, Fermin. Before long, it hit the back of the Greek team’s net.

With the score opened, the game slowed down into a less frantic rhythm. Olympiaco’s Santiago Hezze and Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde saw yellow cards for bad fouls. The Greek team tried to find a good opportunity, but couldn’t quite manage to finish an attack with a goal.

The second change in the score came in the 38th minute, once again thanks to the efforts of Fermin. Having received the ball from Dro Fernandez, he dribbled past the Greek defenders and made it 2-0 for the home heroes. His goal was accompanied by a yellow card given to Olympiacos’ Dani Garcia for a foul on Pedri.

Goals And Controversies

The second half started well for Olympiacos. In the 50th minute, they took advantage of Barcelona’s de-concentration and put the ball in Szczęsny’s net. It turned out that one of the players involved in the goal was offside, and the goal was disallowed, but it didn’t mean that the Greek team’s chance was taken away. The referee noticed that before the offside, Eric Garcia touched the ball with his arm, and a penalty was awarded to Olympiacos. Ayoub El Kaabi converted it into a goal.

Soon after, Olympiaco’s good mood was soured when the game was stopped after Hezze fouled Marc Casado and received a second yellow card. He was sent off from the field, even though replays revealed that the foul wasn’t severe enough to earn him such a stern punishment. Unfortunately for Olympiacos, converting a second yellow into a red isn’t a situation that allows for a VAR check, so the referee couldn’t fix his wrong call.

Barcelona Revived

In the 65th minute, Marcus Rashford rushed towards Olympiaco’s goal, only to be stopped by the team’s goalkeeper. Since he was the first one out of the two of them to touch the ball, even though Konstantinos Tzolakis tried to pull his arms away, a penalty was awarded to Barcelona. Lamine Yamal easily converted it into yet another goal for his team.

While the first half wasn’t Barcelona’s best, they seemed to come alive in the second. With the score already in their favor, they performed attack after attack, never giving Olympiacos much room to breathe.

In the 74th minute, Marcus Rashford scored his team’s fourth goal. Only two minutes later, Fermin made it a hat-trick when he changed the score to 5-1. Blaugrana still wasn’t done. Encouraged by his first goal, Rashford added another one in the 79th minute.

End Of My Barcelona Rant

Blaugrana did what they set out to do. They proved that, despite the loss against PSG, they are still a force to be reckoned with. If they continue their Champions League campaign in style, they might return to the group of teams seen as the favorites of this year’s tournament.
