After a short international break, FC Barcelona returned to the stadiums, this time to face Girona. While usually the odds would be heavily in the former team’s favour, their recent streak of injuries put a question mark on the possibility of an easy victory. On top of that, now two points behind Real Madrid in the La Liga standings, the team needed to win. A draw or a loss was out of the question.
Barcelona started the match quite strongly. They controlled the pace, and continuously pushed the action towards Girona’s half. Their efforts paid off in just the 13th minute. It was then, that the incredible Pedri was given the ball in the penalty box. He didn’t let go until he was ready to shoot it right into his opponents’ net. Just like that, Blaugrana moved into the lead in front of their home crowd.
Girona’s answer was quick and efficient. Seven minutes after Pedri’s goal, Alex Witsel equalised the score with a beautiful overhead kick. Barcelona spent the rest of the first half in somewhat of a frenzy. They couldn’t manage any truly great action, and were under constant attack. In the end, only luck saved them from conceding another goal.
The second half was brutal for Barcelona, but this time, unlike in the match against Sevilla, not because they were losing themselves on the field. It was a terrible ordeal because of how good they were doing with nothing to show for it.
Fermin Lopez was subbed onto the field right after the break and immediately began pressing Girona. Time after time, he stood before goal-scoring opportunities, only to hit the bar or have his attempts saved by the goalkeeper. He wasn’t the only player facing a similar predicament. Throughout the 45 minutes, Barcelona created a multitude of promising actions, but couldn’t convert any of them into a goal.
There was even one time when Pau Cubarsi’s ball did make it into Girona’s net. Unfortunately for the fans gathered at Barcelona’s stadium, the score didn’t change, as the referee decided that Eric Garcia had fouled one of Girona’s defenders during the attack.
As the game neared its end, it began to get heated. A few yellow cards were shown to the agitated players, and Hansi Flick was ejected from the field after talking back to the referee. It seemed like a draw was imminent… At least until Ronald Araujo did the impossible.
In the third out of the four minutes of added time, Araujo scored the final goal of the game, putting his team in the lead. With almost no time left on the clock, Girona couldn’t find the answer they needed. The final score was 2:1 for the home heroes, and the title of MVP went to the man who opened the score, Pedri.
The match wasn’t Barcelona’s best, but it was good enough to give them the coveted three points, despite the multitude of injuries. They are currently the leaders of La Liga, but only because their main rivals, Real Madrid, have not played this week’s game yet.
