The last season could have been one of the most successful seasons in the history of Inter Milan. In the end, the team wasn’t able to deliver until the very end, and that’s why the club squandered four title chances until now. Is this going to impact the Club World Cup?
Inter started the 2024/25 season with lots of ambition. Like in each of the last seasons, it has been the goal to play for every single possible title.
For a long time, it looked quite good for Inzaghi’s team, and the club was completely on its way. Until January 2025, there were only two defeats, which is incredible for a team that has to play so many matches.
The new year started with the Supercoppa Italiana. Inter managed to win against Atalanta, but unfortunately lost the final against its local rival AC Milan.
This meant that the first title chance was gone too. Despite some more losses in February, Inzaghi and his team were still on track until April.
At the latest beginning of April, fans, spectators, and especially football experts were noticing some issues Inter has to face.
Some problems with injuries became more and more significant. At the same time, those players would have been needed since the starting eleven and some others were getting more and more tired. They weren’t able to perform at their highest level in every single match anymore.
That’s why some weaker performances and results were seen in the weeks of April.
Despite beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the team lost another final against Milan in the Coppa Italia final, and Inter lost two important matches in the Serie A as well. The latter led to losing the top spot in the league to Napoli, so close before the end of the season.
Three wins in the last four Serie A matches were simply not enough to retake the lead. A disappointing draw against Lazio, with a dubious penalty against Inter, cost the club the second league title in a row.
In the meantime, the team was performing on a really high level in the Champions League all season. Especially defeating Bayern Munich in the quarterfinal and Barcelona in the semi-final has been absolutely incredible and a bit unexpected at the same time.
The consequence of all those victories has been reaching the Champions League final. A massive achievement by Inzaghi, his team, and all the people around.
After an undeserved loss against Manchester City in 2023, the club received another chance to finally win the biggest European club trophy.
Unfortunately, PSG turned out to be by far too good for Inter in this final.
It has been the fourth loss of a title this season. Calling it a disappointing end of the season is an understatement. Inter’s successful manager Simone Inzaghi left the club immediately and joined Al-Hilal. A disastrous and frustrating end to a promising season.
Now the Club World Cup in the US is starting in just a few days. A cup, where Inter would usually be one of the favourites to win it. Indeed, the club is having a couple of issues at the moment, with some injuries, without having a real head coach anymore, and with lots of demotivated players after a heartbreaking Champions League final and a terrible season ending.
It should still be possible to reach the knock-out stages since Inter is facing Monterrey from Mexico, Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan, and River Plate from Argentina.
Everything else would be a disaster, honestly, but Inter is also not considered one of the favourites for winning the Club World Cup with all those issues. Instead, Inter will be more like a grab bag, and nobody knows how they will be able to perform after this unnerving season.
