Girona take on Granada on Friday with the first match of the final round of fixtures in La Liga’s 2023-24 season. Neither team has anything to play, but one player does – Artem Dovbyk. The 26-year-old is in a direct battle with Villarreal’s Alexander Sorloth for the Pichichi Trophy.
After scoring four against Real Madrid last weekend, Sorloth leads the way on 23 goals, with Dovbyk on 21. The Girona marksman will need to score at least to take the lead in the race before Villarreal visit Osasuna later in the week (Dovbyk has more assists, so he wins if they finish level on goals).
Despite Dovbyk needing goals to catch up, Girona manager Michel Sanchez has confirmed that Girona won’t play any differently than usual, with no plans to play into Dovbyk’s hands – quotes via Diario AS.
“Granada are a team that I’m convinced will come to win. We need to finish the season in the best way, which is by winning. Then if it’s with two goals from Dovbyk, all the better. But it will be difficult and it is true that he has the possibility of getting the Pichichi. First you have to win. The best thing about this year is that we scored 78 goals, with a lot of players involved in it, and we had a lot of chances to find the back of the net. The important thing is to win the game.
“We have to win the game, which for me is the most important thing. I don’t think a game can be prepared for a player, I don’t understand football in this way. I prepare the games so that the team plays well, is above the opponent or tries and wins. It’s true that, if the opponent takes a penalty, of course, we prefer Dovbyk to take it. But in the game it’s impossible to look at just one player, it would be a mistake on our part.”
Girona and Dovbyk are more than capable of scoring several goals at Montilivi on Friday night, and there’s no doubt that Sorloth will be watching on intently.

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to be joined by Joao Felix this summer, but he is eyeing another Chelsea star, according to reports. The Saudi Pro League side are on the verge of signing Felix from Chelsea in a deal worth up to €50m after a package was agreed between the two clubs, with the Portugal international given permission to travel for a medical. Despite only joining Chelsea on a permanent deal last summer, Felix will be allowed to depart in an initial deal worth €30m plus significant add-ons, with the transfer also including a sell-on clause. It wasn't a successful return to Stamford Bridge for Felix, who previously played for the Blues during a loan spell in the second half of the 2022-23 season. It will see him link up with Portugal compatriot Ronaldo, who has been with the Saudi club since January 2023. With the deal for Felix advancing, it has been claimed Ronaldo is eyeing another Chelsea star to make the move to the Middle East. According to Spanish journalist Jose Felix Diaz, Ronaldo wants Cucurella to follow Felix to Al-Nassr. Cucurella, who joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 for in excess of £60m from Brighton Hove Albion, has become a key player for the Blues. He is currently contracted until June 2028 after signing an initial six-year contract in west London. The 27-year-old is settled in the capital after overcoming early challenges following his big-money switch, with Cucurella a firm favourite and regular starter under head coach Enzo Maresca. Regardless of Ronaldo's reported desire, which will no doubt flatter Cucurella, it is highly unlikely the Spaniard would switch Chelsea given the trajectory the Blues are on, particularly after their Conference League and Club World Cup triumphs this summer, as well as qualifying for next season's Champions League. Maresca singled out Cucurella after their 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final earlier this month, revealing: "He will be the soul of the party tonight. I don't want to talk about any single player but for Cucu, I do, he is a smart player and one of the main characters in the locker room. He will be the soul of the party."
The Cleveland Guardians are quite a mystery heading into the MLB trade deadline, as no one seems to know whether they will buy, sell or possibly even do nothing before July 31. The Guardians are hovering around .500, but they are still smack dab in the middle of the American League Wild Card race. That's in spite of losing 10 straight just before the All-Star break. Even with Cleveland remaining in contention, there are some who believe the Guardians might sell given their conservative nature, but talk show host Bruce Drennan has provided some rather bad news for the team in that regard: the players they might want to move don't have much value. “No top prospects for a big bat, and I don’t necessarily see us selling players, like Carlos Santana or Lane Thomas. What can you get in return?” Drennan said. Drennan has a point. Santana and Thomas are both impending free agents, and neither has been all that good this season. Santana owns a .665 OPS, and Thomas has been on and off the injured list while hitting just .160 on the year. Of course, the Guardians would surely be able to land a hefty return for players like Steven Kwan and Emmanuel Clase, but it does not seem like Cleveland is going to move either of those two stars. Perhaps the Guardians will surprise some people and go all in by adding pieces at the deadline, but that isn't exactly in their nature. We'll see what happens before the end of the months, but it stands to reason that Cleveland might just stand pat, as Drennan anticipates. Read More Cleveland Guardians Coverage
The Dallas Cowboys extended one of their stars Sunday, just not the one fans wanted them to pay. At Cowboys training camp Saturday, Dallas fans serenaded owner Jerry Jones with "Pay Micah [Parsons]" chants. The EDGE, of course, is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract this season. Jones must not have been listening. He gave tight end Jake Ferguson a new contract instead. Dallas and the 26-year-old pass-catcher agreed to a four-year, $52M contract extension, via NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. This move seems head-scratching. Parsons has won the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year and earned two first-team All-Pro nods since the Cowboys took him with pick No. 12 in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old EDGE also finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Ferguson, meanwhile, is solid but not elite. In three seasons with the Cowboys, the 2022 fourth-round pick has made one Pro Bowl and has never finished with more than 761 receiving yards in a season. An extension for Parsons will devour future cap space. The Cowboys may be worried about that after giving quarterback Dak Prescott (four years, $240M) and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (four years, $136M) long-term deals in 2024. Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt signed a lucrative three-year, $123M extension on July 17, making him the league's highest-paid non-QB. Parsons could command a similar contract. If cap space is Dallas' primary concern, however, why would it extend Ferguson? He's now set to be the NFL's seventh-highest-paid TE. The Cowboys waited to extend Lamb and Prescott just before the start of the 2024 season. They may be doing the same with Parsons. The star defender has said, "Ownership is always gonna make [contract negotiations] drag out." Regardless, the Cowboys should've paid Parsons before Ferguson. That's a much bigger priority for the team.
New York Yankees star Aaron Judge missed Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies with an elbow injury, and the slugger is now headed to the injured list. The Yankees fell 9-4 to the Phillies on Saturday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y., which marked their third consecutive loss. Judge played in Friday night's 12-5 loss to Philadelphia, but Aaron Boone announced before Saturday's game that Judge was dealing with an "elbow issue" and would sit out. Following his team's latest loss, Boone shared some new information about Judge's injury. Judge has been diagnosed with a flexor strain, but the Yankees believe he can return in less than two weeks. When Judge returns to the lineup, Boone said it will initially be as a designated hitter. Judge is having an outstanding season. He entered Saturday batting .342, which is the best mark in baseball. The reigning American League MVP has 37 home runs, 85 RBI and a 1.160 OPS. The Yankees are now six games behind the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays and fighting to remain atop the wild-card race. It goes without saying that they are hopeful Judge will be able to return as soon as possible.
