The extended international break has been a strange adjustment for many football fans.

Rather than the traditional September and October pauses in the domestic football calendar, the 2026/27 season has seen a longer break than usual, with nations playing four games over a three-week period, rather than the usual two matches.

Manchester United have had their fair share of players depart for the international scene during the first break of the campaign.

However, the Red Devils have no players in the England senior setup after Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford pulled out through fitness issues.

For the Under-20s, on the other hand, Harry Amass, Ayden Heaven, Jack Fletcher, Jim Thwaites, and Shea Lacey were called up for games against Italy, France and Germany. None of those Manchester United prospects pulled out, all featuring in the nation’s latest youth game.

Under experienced former-EFL manager Darren Moore, England beat Germany 2-1 on Sunday, despite Jack Fletcher’s first-half red card.

All but Thwaites began the game from the off from the Red Devils ranks, but goals from Chelsea’s Shim Mheuka and Manchester City’s Kian Noble were the ones that secured the victory, despite Germany’s man advantage for 45 minutes.

England’s win meant international silverware for the Under-20s, including the five Manchester United players, according to The England Academy on X.

The account reported that the Three Lions won the tournament ‘La Nucia’, held in the town in Spain.

The trophy will have given the young players a taste of international success, something England will be keen to breed within their ranks as they chase the historically elusive goal of bringing football home in the coming years.

A win over powerhouses Germany is a good sign.
