Managerial movement continues across English football following a turbulent period for several clubs, including Manchester United.
Earlier this year, the Red Devils parted ways with Ruben Amorim before turning to interim solutions.
While attention has largely remained on Old Trafford and their next long-term appointment, developments elsewhere involving figures connected to the club are beginning to emerge.
Fleetwood Town, a club with growing links to Manchester United in recent years, have now made a significant decision regarding their managerial position after a strong run of form.
The League Two side have worked closely with United across multiple deals.
In the summer, they signed forward Ethan Ennis on loan from Manchester United, while defender Rhys Bennett recently completed a permanent move to the club.
Those connections have continued to strengthen behind the scenes, particularly within coaching pathways.
Now, Fleetwood have officially confirmed their latest move.
The club have announced the permanent appointment of Matt Lawlor as Head Coach following a successful interim spell in charge, as confirmed via the Fleetwood Town website.
Lawlor, who had been overseeing the first team on a temporary basis, impressed significantly during his time in charge.
He guided the side to an eight-game unbeaten run which ultimately convinced the club to hand him the role on a long-term basis.
He has signed a deal running until the end of the 2027-28 season.
While many may not immediately recognise his name, Matt Lawlor does have a connection to Manchester United.
Earlier in his coaching career, he worked within United’s development structure, contributing to coaching programmes aimed at developing young players before moving into a full-time pathway role elsewhere.
Since joining Fleetwood in 2019, he has progressed steadily through the ranks, initially working as a youth coach before becoming Head of Coaching and Player Development.
His work in that role focused heavily on nurturing talent and building a clear pathway into senior football.
He also gained valuable managerial experience through spells with Fleetwood’s partner club Waterford, where he took charge on multiple occasions in both caretaker and interim roles.
Now entrusted with the role on a permanent basis, Lawlor will be tasked with continuing Fleetwood’s recent progress and building on the momentum established during his interim tenure.
His appointment represents another example of coaching pathways linked to Manchester United producing opportunities across the wider football pyramid.
