Former England international claims there is ‘no chance’ Liverpool can land 21-year-old Trent replacement

Liverpool have been subject to links with multiple players for the right fullback role, with Trent Alexander-Arnold subject to speculation with a move away from Anfield Stadium, and Chelsea fullback Malo Gusto has been among the players rumoured to be on the Merseysiders list.

The Reds find themselves in a position of weakness on the contract side of things with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s current deal due at the end of the ongoing 2024/25 campaign.

Gusto has taken massive strides since his move to West London, with the Frenchman putting in ample impressive performances, especially with Reece James’ extended absence at Stamford Bridge. And the 21-year-old’s high athletic outings, where he is not only an attacking threat but also astute defensively, have put him right into the mix for a possible target to replace Trent at L4.

Robinson thinks Gusto won’t join Liverpool

However, amid rumours linking Gusto to Liverpool, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson insists that there’s ‘no chance‘ for the Blues to sell the Olympique Lyonnais graduate to ‘title rivals’ Liverpool in the future. Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, Robinson said:

“No chance. He’s been playing a lot for Chelsea with the injuries Reece James has had. There are a lot of players who have played with James who will tell you he’s one of the best full-backs they’ve played with, but his injury record.

“You look at what Chelsea are carrying now and what their model is. We ridiculed the amount of players they have, but with a win at the weekend, they could go top of the Premier League. Malo Gusto has been a key part of that, and Chelsea will not want to sell an important player to a title rival. I think that would be a very, very difficult deal for Liverpool to do.”

For Liverpool, while Gusto is an interesting option, the fact that Chelsea won’t entertain selling a player of his potential to direct rivals means they will need to look elsewhere.
