The star in question has proved to be a liability for Tottenham in recent months.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has been in the media spotlight for all the wrong reasons in recent times. It is evident that fans are beginning to grow frustrated with his behaviour, both on and off the pitch. To make matters worse, the Argentina international is also enduring a poor run of form for the Lilywhites as they remain locked in a Premier League relegation battle this season.

The North Londoners are going through a difficult phase, and the last thing the club needs is another distraction during the business end of the campaign. They have recently appointed Roberto De Zerbi on a long-term deal and believe the Italian tactician could be the right person to help the Lilywhites avoid relegation in the coming weeks. However, De Zerbi’s primary task will be to get the best out of his players, starting with improving the performances of club captain Cristian Romero.

Romero has not conducted himself well at N17 since the turn of the year. He appears unsettled, having taken a subtle dig at the club’s hierarchy on social media over the lack of activity in the January transfer window previously. He then compounded matters by receiving a four-match suspension during a crucial phase of the season following a reckless challenge on Casemiro in the Premier League clash against Manchester United.

Tottenham might be forced to part ways with Cristian Romero

Spurs fans are growing weary of seeing the €50m Cristian Romero in the headlines for negative reasons. His father, Victor Romero, further intensified the situation by publicly revealing details of the 27-year-old’s release clause at N17. This did not sit well with sections of the fanbase, with many suggesting that the defender’s family acted in poor faith by disclosing information about his contract.

Bryan King, however, believes that Romero’s father may have made the statement because the player already has a move lined up for the summer. Speaking to Tottenham News, King said,

“It’s unnecessary to bring it out to the public. His father has been very mischievous. They’ll probably think it sounds better coming from him than from his agent or Romero himself. Romero can always say, ‘I didn’t know anything about it, I want to be at Tottenham,’ all that rubbish. There will be all sorts of denial, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was already lined up for a move to Spain.”

As Bryan King suggests, Romero’s camp may have felt that revealing the release clause through his father would reduce potential backlash on the player himself. However, given the reaction from supporters, it is likely that the 27-year-old will attempt to downplay the situation and shift his focus back to Spurs. King, however, remains of the view that the Argentina international’s actions indicate that a move to Spain could already be in motion.

Recent reports suggest that Cristian Romero is being strongly linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in the summer. The La Liga side are keen to strengthen their defence and have reportedly added the Argentine to their shortlist. Diego Simeone is believed to be an admirer of the player and is interested in working with him next season. This situation could potentially benefit the Lilywhites, who may choose to sell the defender and secure a significant transfer fee in return.
