Italy hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1934, and its team made steady progress toward the World Cup final. Then, they only had to win three games to reach the final, as there were fewer teams in the cup. In their first final, the Italians came up against Czechoslovakia, and most of the 55,000 at the stadium were home fans.

The first half of this game was goalless, but both teams went for a goal in the second.
