French striker Karim Benzema extends contract with Real Madrid

French striker Karim Benzema has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Real Madrid until 2023, the club announced Friday.

There had been speculation about Benzema's future at Real Madrid as he was one of many top players whose contract was set to expire next summer.

Benzema's deal comes after similar agreements were reached with Dani Carvajal and Thibaut Courtois. Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Isco could still choose to walk at the end of the season.

Benzema has been with Real Madrid since the 2009-10 season. He has 194 goals and 90 assists in 384 matches. He tallied two goals in the club's 4-1 victory over Alaves last weekend.

Madrid is planning for several arrivals next summer. Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe is atop their list, as is Manchester United's Paul Pogba. However, PSG is confident it will retain Mbappe after the arrival of Lionel Messi.

Real Madrid has been relatively quiet in the transfer market this summer because of their interest in several key players. The club has only made one signing with David Alaba joining after his Bayern Munich contract expired.

Sergio Ramos also left the club, signing with PSG after his contract expired, and Raphael Varane joined Manchester United. Martin Odegaard signed with Arsenal.
