Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg, which took place on March 5 at the Allianz Arena.
Harry Kane opened the scoring for the Bavarians in the ninth minute. The Englishman found the back of the net with a thumping header from a Michael Olise cross.
The second goal came in the second half from Jamal Musiala (54'). Musiala capitalized on a horrific error from Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar. The Germany international converted from close range after Kovar had dropped the ball.

Harry Kane then recorded his second from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. It was a fantastic display from Vincent Kompany's side. Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen, meanwhile, needs a dramatic second-leg comeback to stay in the UEFA Champions League.
Bayern saw 65% possession at home and managed six shots on target. Leverkusen, meanwhile, had only one shot on target during the game.

Bayern Munich return to action on March 8, taking on VfL Bochum at home in a Bundesliga clash. Kompany's team holds a formidable lead over Leverkusen atop the league table. They have 61 points from 24 matches, eight more than Xabi Alonso's side.
Meanwhile, the second leg of the UCL Round of 16 will take place on March 11 at the BayArena. Given Harry Kane and the rest of the team's performance in the first leg, the Bayern camp's confidence should be sky-high. They look well-placed for a quarter-final spot.

If Savinho departs Manchester City have a list of back up targets besides Rodrygo
Currently, the future of Savinho is up in the air. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the young winger leave Manchester City before the close of the transfer window. As per a report from Jack Gaughan, Tottenham is set to move to sign Savinho. If the Brazilian international leaves City, they will need to sign a replacement attacking player. Real Madrid winger Rodrygo is the likely player City will target to replace Savinho. But that move could prove to be expensive. There are other players in the market that Manchester City could choose to pursue. One such player is AS Monaco’s versatile winger Maghnes Akliouche. Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday that City had denied having any interest in the talented French playmaker. But that could change if Savinho leaves and City cannot land their number one target to replace him. Despite City’s denials, it is believed that Maghnes Akliouche remains on Manchester City’s shortlist. Esteemed Kompany sources have revealed that Manchester City have drawn up a list of alternatives in case they cannot sign Rodrygo to replace Savinho if the ex-Girona winger leaves the club. One player who is on Manchester City’s shortlist is AS Monaco’s versatile winger Maghnes Akliouche. With his versatility to play across the final third and tremendous technical and tactical ability, Maghnes Akliouche fits the bill as a typical Manchester City player. The young French playmaker has impressed while playing at Monaco. His impressive displays have caught the eye of other clubs besides Manchester City. Bayer Leverkusen and Inter Milan are also contemplating a move for Akliouche. It is believed that AS Monaco were demanding between €70-80 million to sell their prized asset. But it is thought that they could accept a bid of €50 million if pressed. Maghnes Akliouche could be a cheaper alternative to Rodrygo if Manchester City choose to move for the creative young winger. Manchester City have denied any interest in Maghnes Akliouche but this summer has shown that things can quickly change. If the past week has revealed anything it is that what appears to a non-starter in terms of a transfer can change quickly. That is what has occurred in terms of Manchester City’s interest in PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. There appeared to be little chance of City signing the Italian international. Now it would be a major surprise if Donnarumma didn’t become a City player. The same situation could play out in regards to City’s denial in having any interest in Maghnes Akliouche. As reported above, Manchester City have denied having any interest in AS Monaco’s versatile winger. But if Savinho leaves City and a move for Rodrygo doesn’t come together, Manchester City could reignite their interest in the talented French playmaker. It seems unlikely at this stage but anything is possible during the closing stages of the summer transfer window. This week’s events are proof of that.
Browns HC gives troubling Shedeur Sanders update ahead of Eagles game
On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns learned that rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders was dealing with an oblique injury that could sideline him for Saturday's game at the Philadelphia Eagles. However, it appears Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski could keep Sanders out of action through Cleveland's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 23. "He felt it early, I think, warming up, and then felt it throughout [individual drills] and we took a look at it," Stefanski told reporters on Thursday while speaking about what Sanders experienced on Wednesday, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "If it’s a right guard, you can play through that. When it’s a quarterback, you kind of need that muscle to throw. So unfortunately, we’re going to put him down for a little bit here. We will treat it day to day and see how he responds." Stefanski said the Browns want "to be really careful" with the Sanders injury because quarterbacks "torque and twist their body" on pass plays. Despite performing well in his preseason debut last Friday, Sanders, the 2025 fifth-round draft pick, remained fourth on Cleveland's unofficial depth chart before his setback. Kenny Pickett is still attempting to recover from the hamstring injury that kept him out of the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8, so veteran Joe Flacco is on track to start Cleveland's Week 1 matchup versus the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. Meanwhile, 2025 third-round draft pick Dillon Gabriel will start against the Eagles this Saturday if it's determined his hamstring is healthy. Like Pickett, Gabriel spent the Carolina game as a spectator. "Injuries stink for all these guys," Stefanski added. "They don’t want to miss a rep for any reason. But, there’s a way to continue to prepare, continue to get better, even when you’re not getting those reps up because of injuries." Sanders seemed to have a shot at earning the QB2 gig after he completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Cleveland's 30-10 victory over Carolina. He could now enter September as Cleveland's QB4 if Browns general manager Andrew Berry is serious about carrying four quarterbacks on the active roster for the Cincinnati game.
Six NBA players most likely to be traded
NBA teams won't assemble for training camp until September, but some players may not be on those teams for long. Here are six NBA players likely to get traded in the upcoming season. 1. Lauri Markkanen, Utah Jazz Some NBA teams go all-in. The Utah Jazz have gone all-out, ditching veterans Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson and John Collins this summer. Their lone remaining high-priced player is Lauri Markkanen, a 2023 All-Star who has four years and $196M left on his contract. He had a down year in 2024-25, playing just 47 games and dropping to 19 points per game, but the Jazz were also holding Markkanen out so much that they got fined. Markkanen's shooting would fit on nearly any NBA team, and he's still only 28 years old. The Jazz have amassed a lot of future draft picks, but many of them aren't great — pick swaps with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves, and a 2027 Los Angeles Lakers first-rounder. Trading their Finnish superstar could get them a huge return, especially if NBA teams are seeing him dominate in EuroBasket exhibition games. 2. Jonathan Kuminga, Golden State Warriors It seems like a foregone conclusion that Jonathan Kuminga will resign with the Golden State Warriors and equally inevitable that the Warriors will then try to trade their 22-year-old forward. The only holdup is that the restricted free agent and his team can't agree on a new contract. The Warriors need to get something back for their former lottery pick, but they also need to preserve his salary slot. Kuminga and his agent couldn't work out a sign-and-trade this summer, but once free agents who signed this summer can be traded Dec. 15, far more trade options will open up. Kuminga doesn't want to be on the Warriors. The Warriors don't want to guarantee him playing time. The breakup looks like it's coming. 3. Anfernee Simons, Boston Celtics In a year where the Boston Celtics have dramatically slashed their payroll in Jayson Tatum's absence, they have a huge incentive to deal Anfernee Simons, the guard acquired from the Portland Trail Blazers in the Jrue Holiday trade. Getting rid of Simons gets them under the luxury tax, which is worth tens of millions of dollars, while also keeping the Celtics out of penalties for repeatedly being a tax team. It all depends on whether the Celtics will settle for the financial savings or hold out to get assets back for the impending free agent. But Simons is almost certainly headed somewhere. 4. P.J. Washington, Dallas Mavericks P.J. Washington was a huge part of the Dallas Mavericks' run to the NBA Finals in 2024. Unfortunately, he plays the same position as the guy the Mavericks just took with the No. 1 pick in the draft, Cooper Flagg. The Mavericks also have Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II and the newly-extended Daniel Gafford. Washington and his expiring contract are now expendable. 5. CJ McCollum/Khris Middleton, Washington Wizards The Washington Wizards took on McCollum and Middleton in trades in the past year, moves that were primarily made to shed the long-term salaries of Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma. But even though those players were both born in 1991, they should still be able to contribute to winning teams in 2025-26. The Wizards may value their veteran leadership, but they also have a roster full of recent draft picks who need playing time — and you can never have too many future draft picks.
Khalil Mack gives glowing review of Chargers' rookie offensive weapon
The Los Angeles Chargers have looked every bit like a quality team from top to bottom in their start to the preseason. The team has had impressive showings against the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints, which resulted in wins. Preseason is the time when teams get a glimpse of their younger talent, and the Chargers will be leaning on youth in the 2025 season. On Wednesday, star linebacker Khalil Mack was asked about rookie running back Omarion Hampton. Mack's comments should have every Chargers fan jumping for joy. "I don’t want to say how he’s impressed me, but I can tell. If you play football, then you know. It’s going to be fun to watch him play," said Mack. The Chargers could be leaning on Hampton a lot more than they originally hoped in his rookie season. Star offseason acquisition Najee Harris is still feeling the effects of a freak eye injury he suffered in July. However, Hampton understands the mission at hand. No one enters the NFL wanting to be a backup. Especially a first-round pick. When fully healthy, this Chargers backfield could be one of the most dangerous in the league. Now, with a veteran like Mack saying how special Hampton can be, in the words of Michael Jordan, the ceiling is the roof for this unit.
