Matteo Gabbia thanks Max Allegri for working on Milan’s defensive frailties and is ‘impressed’ with new buy Christopher Nkunku’s attitude so far.

They return to action after the break for international duty by hosting Bologna on Sunday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Among the reasons new coach Allegri was chosen to take over was his focus on strengthening the defence.

“We are working really hard, not just as defenders, but the whole team,” Gabbia told reporters as he attended tonight’s Premio Gentleman Fair Play awards.

“It is normal that there is a focus on the defenders when we concede goals, but Allegri was able to explain how important the whole process that leads to the moves is. He is motivating us in training and we are seeing improvements.”

Gabbia expecting Milan improvement

The Rossoneri had a dismal start to their season with the 2-1 home defeat to Cremonese, then won 2-0 away to Lecce.

“We are well aware that the opening match did not go the way we expected. However, we reacted well and did well not to allow ourselves to be surrounded by too much negativity.”

Milan certainly made a lot of changes over the summer, bringing in a new coach and numerous players.

“The club made its choices, and now we have a different atmosphere at Milanello. I also want to thank those who left, because although it was not a very positive campaign, the blame is to be shared out between everyone,” added Gabbia.

Among the new arrivals is Nkunku from Chelsea, at a cost of €37m plus up to €5m in add-ons, and a percentage of the sell-on fee.

“The club did well to sign such a talented player, we’ll enjoy seeing him on the field. I am happy and impressed with his attitude so far.”

Milan only need to focus on Serie A and the Coppa Italia this season, having failed to qualify for European football.

“I wouldn’t talk about targets this season, whether it’s the Champions League spots or anything else. We must try to win one game at a time, every game, and then we’ll see in March what we’re in the running for.”
