Agbonlahor believes Ruben Amorim wants to be sacked as Manchester United manager

Manchester United have been having a rough start to the 2025/26 campaign, and the pressure is piling up at Old Trafford. With a record of one win from four in the league, complemented by being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town, has raised a lot of frustration among the supporters.

And now questions are being asked about whether head coach Ruben Amorim actually wants to be in the job at M16.

Gabby Agbonlahor certainly doesn’t think so.

Gabby Agbonlahor speaks on Amorim’s place at United

Former Aston Villa midfielder Gabby Agbonlahor has made a bold claim while speaking on talkSPORT. He insisted that the recent demeanour from the Portuguese head coach shows that he’s already had enough. This while hinting that the former Sporting Lisbon manager actually wants to be sacked. He said:

“The club’s in a mess. And if there’s ever a manager who has shown in his recent press conferences he wants to be sacked, it’s Ruben Amorim.

“I can read body language. I can read the way managers speak. The way he’s talking, the formation I’m going to stick with. If he does, if he wants anything different, you get rid of the manager.”

Time is running thin for Amorim

Let’s be honest, that one is quite a brutal take on what is going on. But then when you think about it, his words aren’t entirely baseless. The 40-year-old has visibly looked quite frustrated on the touchline and at press conferences in recent weeks. This is especially after he doubled down on his 3-4-2-1 system despite all the criticism from pundits and fans, complemented by quite visible poor results.

And the supporters have started to lose their patience with him, given his stubborn tactics are taking this side nowhere.

We saw how the decision-makers at M16 went on to invest big in the summer window. And this squad now has ample talent in their roster, but they look quite disjointed and predictable on the pitch. You could almost call it ineffective in terms of how this system is leading to results.

We also saw a lot being said about his use of players like Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw with limited game time or unfamiliar roles, respectively. And all of this is adding up.

Author Opinion

Now United have Chelsea, Sunderland, and Brentford in the league. This is the run before the upcoming October international break. And then they play Liverpool. So if we don’t see the club taking serious points in those next three games, then that fortnight of time leading up to it would be ideal for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos to act upon. Because make no mistake, the pressure from the outside is growing louder with every passing game.

So even if Amorim is not exactly looking for the exit door (as Agbonlahor suggests), the Portuguese is not really doing himself any favours right now with being stubborn. And if these underwhelming performances continue, it might not be long before someone else is standing on the touchline at M16.
