Tottenham Hotspur have a great chance of reaching the Europa League finals this season. The Lilywhites have endured a disastrous domestic campaign and are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table. However, they have a chance of saving the season and winning a major trophy that would enable them to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Spurs have registered 19 league defeats under Ange Postecoglou this season. The North London club sit 16 th in the Premier League and have managed to lose a record eight home games during that time. There is also a realistic possibility that the Lilywhites might finish the season just a place above the relegation zone. Fans have also lost patience with the mediocre performances on show week in week out.
But the Europa League campaign paints a different story for Ange Postecoglou’s men. As per BBC, the Lilywhites are unbeaten in their last 20 home matches in European competitions. Ange’s men have managed to reach within touching distance of winning the Europa League and end the club’s 17-year-long wait for a major trophy. If the Lilywhites manage to win the competition, then all will be forgiven and Ange Postecoglou will etch his name in the history books.
Tottenham registered a comprehensive 3-1 victory against Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals. The Lilywhites started the game with a bang as Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the first minute of the game. James Maddison followed that up after his scuffed shot beat the keeper to make it 2-0. Dominic Solanke also got on the scoresheet after slotting home a penalty in the second half to make it 3-0.
However, Bodo/Glimt came up with a goal in the dying stages of the game to make it 3-1 and make the tie interesting in the return leg. Now, Gary Lineker has warned Spurs not to get complacent in the second leg against the Norwegian club. The ex-player said on the Rest Is Football Podcast (as transcribed by TBR Football),
“Bodo/Glimt, their record in Europe is something like, they’ve not lost in Europe at home for like 30-odd games or something like that. It’s ridiculous! Astroturf pitch is probably why (their home record is good), though, isn’t it? That’s a significant advantage!”
Gary Lineker pointed out that Bodo/Glimt are unbeaten at home in Europe this season and are not going to be an easy opponent for Spurs. The ex-England international also urged Tottenham not to get complacent ahead of the tie and instead focus on the job at hand. Lineker also acknowledged that the game is going to be played on astroturf, so Spurs players will face a different challenge and will need some time to get used to the conditions.
Ange Postecoglou will hope that he can end the season on a high. The Australian is on the verge of being sacked in the summer, and all his fate hangs on how his team performs in Europe this season. If the Lilywhites manage to win the Europa League, then it is possible that Big Ange will stay at the club for next season and build a team for the future.
