Lisandro Martinez and Manchester United have shared a shocking start to the 2026/27 season.
United sit 17th in the Premier League table and have won just twice in all competitions – against Ipswich Town and Azerbaijani side Sabah in the Champions League.
Argentine defender Martinez has been a key symbol of the Red Devils’ misfortunes.
Publication The Athletic branded Martinez as the worst player in the Premier League this season on Saturday, highlighting key errors against Fulham and Chelsea, as well as error-ridden episodes against Spurs, Bournemouth and Ipswich.
Martinez also called out members of the Manchester United board following a Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, highlighting poor transfer dealings in the summer window.
Gary Neville has had his say on United for the first time since their two-nil defeat at Stamford Bridge, picking up on Martinez’s horror-showing in which he gave away a penalty and was sent off.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday ahead of Liverpool’s match against Arsenal in the Premier League at Anfield, the United legend said, “That’s what I expect from him [Martinez], to be honest with you, that’s what I see.
“I said the other week, and you’ve got to respect the fact that he’s a World Cup winner, but every time I watch him for Manchester United he’s at fault for a goal.
“He was at fault for two yesterday, the first goal was solely on him.
“I know that the midfield could have done better but Harry Maguire has to go and watch that run of Estevao, and he has to just come across, but I think he [Martinez] thinks that Morgan Rogers is going to come back onto his right foot.
“And so he waits for him, and covers a little bit, and Morgan Rogers just goes through the middle of him.”
Neville then calls out Martinez’s hypocrisy, with the defender giving interviews on the state of the club while making huge errors himself.
“If I was giving goals away that he was giving away I wouldn’t be doing interviews, and to be fair I wouldn’t be speaking out, because I have to say I’d be curled up in a ball if I was playing like that for Manchester United.
“And we all give goals away as defenders, but the quantity of goals he gives away is remarkable.”
Martinez is right to have worries over the state of Manchester United at the moment, but he is a huge culprit in not helping out current head coach Michael Carrick.
Gary Neville’s point is on the money – United need to get their heads down and solve issues internally, rather than laying them bare for the footballing world to see.
