The former United captain recalls a festive ritual that left fellow pundits stunned.

Gary Neville has offered a rare glimpse into life behind the scenes at Manchester United, describing the Christmas celebrations overseen by Sir Alex Ferguson as one of the most memorable traditions of his playing career. The story, shared on a special festive edition of the Stick to Football show, left fellow pundits Ian Wright and Jill Scott visibly astonished.

Neville, who spent his entire professional career at Old Trafford and later captained the club under Ferguson, enjoyed unprecedented success during the legendary manager’s 26-year reign. Across that period, the former right-back lifted eight Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, three FA Cups and three League Cups before retiring in 2011 — achievements that form part of the backdrop to the traditions he now recalls with fondness.

Speaking alongside Wright, Scott, Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane, Neville described how the annual Christmas dinner at United’s Carrington training complex became a unique bonding experience.

According to the former England defender, Ferguson and his coaching staff personally served the players, thanked them for their efforts throughout the year, and even cleared away after the meal.

Neville labelled the occasion “unbelievable” and “a brilliant day,” explaining that young apprentices would perform a festive show while the entire squad and staff watched together. The scene — with the manager and coaches delivering Christmas pudding and waiting on the players — left Wright and Scott visibly impressed by the level of care and respect shown within Ferguson’s squad.

A tradition that feels far removed from today’s United

The warm culture Neville described now feels distant for many supporters. Since Ferguson guided United to their last Premier League title in 2013, the club has struggled to reclaim its former dominance at the top of English football. His authority, discipline and ability to command respect — even when making ruthless decisions involving figures such as Roy Keane and Jaap Stam — helped forge one of the most successful dynasties in the sport.

Under current manager Ruben Amorim, United remain in a rebuilding phase, though there have been early signs of renewed structure and leadership. Whether the modern era at Old Trafford can ever replicate the unity and traditions of the Ferguson years remains an open question, but Neville’s memories offer a compelling reminder of what once set Manchester United apart.
