Germany icon Lothar Matthaus believes Hansi Flick can revive the days of Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona..

Following a whirlwind 24 hours in Catalonia, Flick is expected to be appointed as Barcelona’s new head coach imminently.

Xavi Hernandez will step down after the final game of the season this weekend with the former Spanish international dismissed following talks with club president Joan Laporta.

Flick is now the clear front runner to take charge in Barcelona with Laporta looking to move quickly to resolve this situation.

Despite an underwhelming stint in charge of Germany, including a group stage exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, his double Bundesliga title wins and UEFA Champions League crown at Bayern Munich have kept his stock high.

With an announcement incoming, Matthaus has backed Flick to reignite Barcelona and compared his coaching style to that of Guardiola’s all conquering Barcelona team from 2008 to 2012.

“Hansi’s style suits Barcelona. With Guardiola, Barcelona were spectacular and played great football, with Hansi they can recover that magic”, as per an interview with Bild.

Barcelona cannot finish any higher or lower than second place in La Liga this season as Xavi leads them one last time at Sevilla on May 26.
