The reigning National Women’s Soccer League Champions have added yet another standout star: Guro Reiten is joining NJ/NY Gotham FC on loan from Chelsea through July (the conclusion of her contract) and has agreed to a free-agent deal with Gotham through 2029 once her loan expires.
“I’m really excited to join Gotham FC and grateful for the opportunity to be part of this club,” said Reiten in a press release. “Gotham has built something special over the past few years, and there’s clear ambition here. I’m looking forward to working hard, learning and doing everything I can to help the team succeed.”
The 31-year-old winger brings with her a wealth of experience in the English Women’s Super League, UEFA Women’s Champions League and internationally. Since joining Chelsea in 2019, Reiten played a key role in the club’s sustained dominance, winning six WSL titles, four Women’s FA Cups and three Women’s League Cups, plus reaching the 2021 UWCL final. Reiten recorded 59 goals and 44 assists in 207 appearances across all competitions. She also played alongside goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger and defender Jess Carter before they joined Gotham.
Internationally, Reiten has been a mainstay for the Norwegian women’s national team for over a decade. In 108 games played for Norway, including in multiple UEFA Women’s European Championships and FIFA Women’s World Cups, Reiten has scored 21 goals.
“Guro is a player of exceptional quality who has consistently performed at the highest levels of the game,” said general manager and head of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West. “Her experience competing for major trophies with Chelsea and her impact with the Norwegian national team will bring valuable leadership and attacking creativity to our squad. We’re excited to welcome her to Gotham.”
Reiten brings even more internationally acclaimed vision, creativity and set-piece-taking ability to a team that already boasts Rose Lavelle and Jaedyn Shaw. She is a two-time selection to England’s prestigious PFA Team of the Year and has been included in The Guardian’s 100 Best Footballers list for the past four years. Reiten will be a key piece as Gotham looks toward another NWSL Championship.
