Manchester United are heading into another busy week on the pitch, with focus naturally turning to the next fixture and who is fit enough to make the squad.
But away from training, Harry Maguire has had an old off-field case snap back into the spotlight, with a fresh court ruling landing right in the middle of the run-in.
According to The Daily Mail, Harry Maguire has been found guilty of non-serious assault following a retrial in Greece, and has been handed a suspended 15-month jail sentence.
The report states the hearing took place on the island of Syros, with Maguire not appearing in person as he prepares for Manchester United’s game against Newcastle on Wednesday night.
This case has been running since an incident during a family holiday in Mykonos in August 2020, with the Daily Mail noting Maguire had previously been handed a 21-month suspended sentence at the initial trial.
However, that earlier conviction was automatically quashed on appeal under Greek law, which is why the retrial has now taken place.
Wheeler adds that an appeal is expected to follow Wednesday’s verdict, with the Supreme Court referenced as the next step.
The Daily Mail also claims prosecutors argued Maguire pushed over a police officer who was attempting to handcuff him, causing leg and back injuries, and that he offered to bribe officers, something the United defender previously described as “ridiculous”.
The same report says it was another officer who was punched by one of the defendants, as the prosecution set out its version of events.
Maguire, who joined United from Leicester City in a £80 million move in 2019, has spoken publicly about the situation in the past, calling it “horrible” and adding: “It’s the first time I’ve ever been inside a prison, and I don’t wish it on anybody.”
