Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is under tremendous pressure to deliver a trophy at N17 this season. The Australian has come under the media spotlight frequently in recent months for all the wrong reasons. The Lilywhites have registered 20 Premier League losses this season and it is certain that the end of the road is near for the 59-year-old.
The ex-Celtic manager’s system was never suited to the Premier League. It is the best league in the world and every team capitalises on the smallest of errors. Spurs have a lot of flaws in their gameplan and ‘Ange-Ball’ has just not worked out for the North London club. They sit 17th in the league table, just a place above the relegation zone.
Ange’s men are on their way to record the club’s lowest ever points tally in a single Premier League season. However, Tottenham find themselves in the Europa League final and have the chance of ending their long-standing trophy drought. It will be quite an achievement if the Lilywhites end up with a trophy after a disastrous domestic campaign.
Everyone in the media is taking a dig at Tottenham for the season they have endured. The Lilywhites are comfortably one of the worst teams in the Premier League. The fans have also grown tired of the mediocre performances on the pitch and have voiced out their frustrations frequently.
Now, ex-scout Leonardo Gabbanini has also given a brutal verdict on the Spurs manager. Gabbanini told FirenzeViola,
“The final is the completion of an unfinished journey in the sense that it began two years ago, which coincided with my departure, but in which we chose the coach.”
The former scout added,
“First, there was Conte, who maximised the results, but then the owners decided to take a coach who would make people play and have fun, and we chose him, and a team was created for him, but in the Premier League, he was a rookie.”
Leonardo Gabbanini suggested that Antonio Conte focused on getting results when he was the Spurs manager. The former scout went on to say that Daniel Levy and the owners then wanted to bring in a coach who was more focused on having fun and playing entertaining football. Hence, Ange Postecoglou was hired immediately. But Gabbanini also pointed out that Big Ange is still a rookie in the Premier League.
The end of the road is near for Big Ange at N17, regardless of the outcome in the Europa League final. Daniel Levy has started looking for managerial replacements and has shortlisted a few managers. Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola are linked with a move to N17.
However, Ange Postecoglou has the chance of making history at the North London club this season. Winning the Europa League would end the club’s 17-year wait for trophy. It would also mean that Spurs would play in the Champions League next season. Fans will hope that the players will turn up in the final and give them a lasting memory of winning a European trophy.
