Hednesford Town officially sign Manchester United goalkeeper

Manchester United have experienced major change between the posts over the last year, with Senne Lammens now firmly established as Michael Carrick’s first choice.

Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp last summer and enjoyed a remarkable debut campaign.

The Belgian made 32 Premier League appearances, kept eight clean sheets and was eventually named the league’s Transfer of the Season.

His second year has begun less spectacularly.

United have conceded seven goals across their opening four Premier League matches, although the defensive responsibility stretches far beyond one player.

The goalkeeping department was strengthened again this summer when Karl Darlow arrived to provide experienced competition.

Darlow was handed his United debut against Brighton on Wednesday, but it became a painful night.

Carrick’s side surrendered a two-goal advantage to lose 3-2 and crash out of the League Cup.

While Carrick now has experienced options at senior level, United also continue to develop goalkeepers further down the pathway.

One of those players has now temporarily left Old Trafford in search of something academy football cannot completely recreate: regular senior experience.

Hednesford Town complete Manchester United goalkeeper deal

Hednesford Town have officially announced the loan signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Will Murdock.

The 19-year-old joins the club at Keys Park after spending a decade with United and most recently featuring for the Under-21s.

Hednesford confirmed the move on their official website, with Murdock explaining that the club’s ambition following back-to-back promotions helped convince him to make the switch.

The Yorkshire-born goalkeeper originally joined United’s academy in 2023.

He became first choice during their run to the 2024/25 FA Youth Cup semi-finals and kept six clean sheets in 12 Under-18 Premier League appearances.

Murdock has since progressed into Premier League 2 football and has occasionally trained alongside United’s first team.

He was also included in a senior matchday squad against Fulham in March 2025 before travelling on United’s 2025 pre-season tour of the United States.

Now representing Northern Ireland internationally, Murdock’s next challenge will come away from Carrington, where senior football offers a very different test of a young goalkeeper’s development.
