As Chelsea prepare for their last 16 clash at the Club World Cup against Benfica, the club are still actively working in the transfer market. Fabrizio Romano has now delivered his “here we go” as he reports Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund have agreed a deal for Jamie Gittens to move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea endured difficulties during the 2024/25 season but ultimately achieved Champions League qualification and defeated Real Betis 4-1 in the Europa Conference League final.
The Blues are about to face Benfica at the financially lucrative Club World Cup and will be aiming to progress into the quarter-final. They won two out of three group games, with wins coming against LAFC and ES Tunis, with summer signing Liam Delap scoring his first goal against ES Tunis.
Romano’s update revealed Chelsea and Dortmund have agreed a deal for Gittens to move to Stamford Bridge on a contract until 2032. The medical is said to be happening this evening, with a fee to be confirmed.
Gittens is impressive when he’s progressing with the ball, running at opposition defenders. He has previously been described as a game-changer. He is fearless when given the freedom to use his speed and directness. The excitement he brings should be appreciated by the Stamford Bridge faithful.
One criticism aimed at the 20-year-old is that he can drift in and out of games, and that will need to change if he is to become a permanent fixture in Enzo Maresca’s team. The physicality of the Premier League will also be a hurdle for him to overcome. He is clearly a work in progress, but there is plenty of ability there to improve this Chelsea team.
Their wide players were frustratingly inconsistent last season, and if Gittens can improve Chelsea in wide areas, this will be a huge boost for Maresca and the Stamford Bridge faithful ahead of their Champions League return.
