Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Alcaraz parted ways this week, but there hasn’t been a clear explanation for what led to the split.
Theories have been circulating ever since, with reports varying widely. But so far, neither side has commented publicly on any of them.
Everyone seems to have their own idea about what happened, and several publications have tried to offer inside information on what might be the biggest tennis story of the year.
Trying to make sense of all the speculation, one newspaper from Alcaraz’s hometown of Murcia may have finally pieced together the most plausible account.
In their most recent coverage, La Verdad highlighted Ferrero’s actions during and after the Paris Masters as another factor that added strain to the partnership.
Concerns had already been growing over his commitment, especially following missed tournaments like Cincinnati earlier this year. The way he reportedly left Paris immediately after Alcaraz’s surprise first-round loss to Cameron Norrie was said to have surprised the player and his team.
The report also described Ferrero’s time away as unusual for a coach at this level, noting that Alcaraz’s father was particularly unhappy with what he saw as a lack of dedication.
Ferrero’s absence during Alcaraz’s first Masters 1000 win in Miami was notable, with Samu Lopez stepping in and now taking over as the main coach.
The 45-year-old did make it to the final after missing most of the event due to his father’s passing.
He also skipped the 2023 Queen’s Championships, which Alcaraz won, and last year’s Australian Open.
This year has seen even more absences from Ferrero, including the Qatar Open, Monte Carlo and Cincinnati Masters, and the Japan Open.
Despite this, Alcaraz holds a remarkable 33-2 record without Ferrero in his corner.
