Scott McTominay has been playing as a left winger for Napoli so far this season, collecting more shots on target than in 2024-25 but with fewer successful dribbles and ball recoveries.
McTominay had to slightly change his role on the pitch at Napoli following the arrival of Kevin De Bruyne at the Stadio Maradona.
The Scotland international mostly played as a central midfielder last term, even if, moving towards the left side of the pitch, he often overlapped with the left winger and left-back.
This season, on the other hand, he’s been predominantly used as a left winger or left midfielder, changing the type of contribution to the team.
Several Italian media, including Sky Sport and Calciomercato.com, argue that McTominay has been less effective this season, even if his goal contributions in the opening five league games are exactly the same as a year ago, two (one goal and one assist).
Sky Sport has also made a comparison between other McTominay stats, such as shots on target, successful dribbles and ball recoveries. Below is a full breakdown of McTominay’s stats in Serie A this season, showing a bigger attacking threat, but fewer interceptions and ball recoveries.
