Antoine Semenyo is one of the hottest names in the Premier League at the moment. A slew of clubs are looking to sign him from Bournemouth, but a new frontrunner has emerged for his signature – Manchester City.
With a move to the Etihad Stadium looking likely in the January transfer window, we took a look at how the Ghanaian international might fit into Pep Guardiola’s system.
Additionally, we also compared his performances this season alongside City’s existing wide players. Let’s take a look at what the future might hold for the Cherries ace – and if he will be able to handle it.
Semenyo’s stats from the 2025/26 season hold up very well when compared with the numbers that City’s current wingers have been producing.
He has outscored all of them – only Rayan Cherki, with his 11 G/A, can match Semenyo’s overall number of goal contributions (which also stands at 11). He has, however, played one extra game over Semenyo.
On the surface, it looks like Semenyo is ready to make the jump to City. Despite this, it should be remembered that he is a big fish in a small pond at Bournemouth – it will not be this way in the blue half of Manchester.
Nevertheless, he has the pedigree to demand a regular spot in the first team. Guardiola loves to chop and change his starting XI, but he has a few players who he rarely drops. Semenyo will need to prove he can provide consistency to earn this right – a few flashes of brilliance here and there will not cut it in a Guardiola team.
In many ways, Semenyo is a similar player to Jeremy Doku. Both are fast, direct, powerful wingers – as such, to answer this question, let’s take a look at the role that Doku plays for the Sky Blues.
Guardiola’s style of play has long been categorised as efficient, no frills and cautious. He likes his players to fall in line with his regimen, but will afford freedom to his more creative players.
Doku is one such player. An unpredictable dribbler, he can use his quick feet or blistering pace to surge past defenders on a whim and create openings. Most of City’s play can be anticipated and prepared for – Doku gives them an x-factor to keep defences guessing.
As such, Semenyo is likely to share a role with the Belgian international. They will provide quality competition for each other, which should allow them to press on with their development and reach their full potential.
Guardiola’s system has changed over the years. He no longer looks for technical wizardry in wide areas – rather, the Spaniard has identified the strengths that pacey wingers can bring to his teams and his changed his approach to accomodate them.
