A Belgian international has admitted that he thought about joining Chelsea this summer after interest came in from the club.

The transfer window closed a week ago tomorrow now and it already seems like a distant memory ago. Things have gone absolutely dead since then as we went straight from the action of the transfer window, a new domestic season starting, right into an international break that is always very bland.

But it was of course a very busy summer for Chelsea in the transfer market as they tried to get a number of deals done. Chelsea were linked with a number of potential new signings all summer as they looked to prioritise new attacking signings and naturally the rumours flowed.

One player they looked into signing was Lyon’s Malick Fofana and at the times, there was a lot of stories going around about it. The player himself, who has now had two caps for the Belgium national side, has admitted that Chelsea showed an interest in signing him this summer.

Fofana on Chelsea being keen

In words picked up on X this week, Fofana said:

“There was interest from those two clubs [Chelsea and Liverpool], but ultimately it wasn’t concrete enough. I thought about a transfer, but I think it’s more important now that I play a lot, and that has to happen at Lyon. Because I still have progress to make.

“Of course [I want to go to the 2026 World Cup], but I realise I still have a lot to prove. I’ve already made progress. I’m now more decisive and more involved in the game.”

More games at Lyon

Fofana has better guaranteed regular game time at Lyon so it’s probably better for him at least that he stayed there for now and developed some more.
