Several players have stepped up in Tottenham’s Premier League survival bid.

Tottenham Hotspur are starting to pick up form at the most crucial juncture of the campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi’s influence on the team has been clear for all to see. He has been clear with his demands from the players, and they are all responding to those. The 46-year-old has also made some tough choices along the way.

With Spurs still locked in a battle to stay up alongside West Ham, De Zerbi has opted for a more experienced and season-battled midfield over young guns. Against Aston Villa, the Tottenham gaffer combined Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Joao Palhinha in the same starting XI for the first time. The trio outworked and outsmarted Aston Villa’s midfield three of Youri Tielemans, Ross Barkley, and Lamare Bogarde.

Ian Wright thinks two players will be key in keeping Tottenham up in the top flight

The midfield restructuring was pivotal to Tottenham beating Villa 2-1 at Villa Park last weekend, with Conor Gallagher starring. It was Gallagher’s best performance in a Spurs shirt since arriving from Atletico Madrid during the winter transfer window, scoring a remarkable maiden goal.

The England international flourished in a free No.10 role, thanks to a strong base provided by Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur. Palhinha, who netted the winner at Wolves, was preferred ahead of Yves Bissouma to partner Bentancur in the double pivot, and the Portuguese did not disappoint. His presence added a layer of security, physicality and experience that was required to nullify Villa’s powerful midfield.

Arsenal great Ian Wright was impressed by Tottenham’s performance against Villa. He believes Gallagher and Palhinha will be key to keeping the North Londoners in the Premier League.

“Gallagher and Palhinha were unbelievable. Watching them, unbelievable it was,” Ian Wright said on the latest episode of the Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast.

“There’s no way they’re going down with those two.”

Winning breeds confidence

Tottenham went over four months without a Premier League victory before finally getting one at Wolves at the end of April. They managed to build on that by beating Villa away, which has massively helped lift the spirits and confidence levels of the players.

In midfield, De Zerbi’s decision to go with trusted and experienced players has worked very well. Replacing the injured Xavi Simons in the XI remains a big challenge, and with James Maddison still not ready to feature, the Italian boss has liberated Gallagher by pushing him forward. This has led to Gallagher having more of an influence in the proceedings in the last two games than he’s had earlier.

The decision to go for the more accomplished and reliable Palhinha over Bissouma in the middle of the park has not only freed up Gallagher but also provided extra security to the backline. Gallagher and Palhinha have starred in the past two wins, and if the duo can continue their good form, Spurs’ chances of staying in the top flight will truly be bolstered.
