Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol believes Xabi Alonso is the outstanding candidate for the Chelsea job, but it’s still a complicated situation.
The Blues are in the midst of searching for yet another head coach after they sacked Liam Rosenior last month, less than four months after he was appointed.
Rosenior became the second head coach to leave Stamford Bridge this season following Enzo Maresca’s departure in January.
Chelsea are understood to have a shortlist of five or six names, with Alonso and Iraola believed to be the main contenders.
Alonso is thought to be Chelsea’s preferred candidate, whilst the Blues are also said to have carried out checks on Marco Silva, Filipe Luis and Oliver Glasner.
The Blues are thought to believe Iraola is ready for a big job, whilst early talks with Alonso are understood to have been positive.
The Blues are said to still be exploring their options, and Solhekol has now shared his thoughts on Alonso and Chelsea.
“In my personal opinion, Xabi Alonso is the outstanding candidate for Chelsea,” he told Sky Sports as quoted on X.com.
“He has the strongest résumé both as a coach and as a former player, and if Chelsea managed to appoint him, he could potentially become a fantastic manager for the club.”
“But this is still a complicated situation. Alonso is available, highly in demand and likely has other options on the table, which is why Chelsea are also considering alternative candidates internally.”
It’s been reported suggestions Alonso is waiting for the Liverpool job are wide of the mark, with the Blues seemingly having a free run at the former Real Madrid boss.
Positive talks have taken place, and it seems Chelsea have got the perfect opportunity to land one of the most highly regarded up and coming managers in the Europe.
