The spell of Benjamin Pavard at Olympique Marseille isn’t going as hoped, and Inter might have to handle the matter again in a few months. The Ligue 1 team is unlikely to keep him by exercising their €15M option to buy, Calciomercato informs.
Les Phocéens are in turmoil following the divorce with Roberto De Zerbi, who was a proponent of the signing. The defender has done little to help his now former coach. He’s been a fixture but has often been suspect.
Inter and Olympique Marseille have already had preliminary talks regarding the future of Pavard. The French team indicated they might request a significant discount. The two sides have an optimal rapport. The Nerazzurri sent more than a few players to Provence over the years, for instance Alexis Sanchez, Joaquin Correa, and Valentin Carboni, and easily met Luis Henrique’s asking price last summer.
The Serie A leaders had doubts about the Frenchman’s performances and lifestyle last season. The last straw was a heated phone call with his camp after Christian Chivu benched the defender against Udinese. The gaffer and the management accompanied him to the door and replaced him with Manuel Akanji, with great satisfaction. The Nerazzurri had paid about €31M to acquire him from Bayern Munich.
His quick departure for subpar terms didn’t smell right, as, while he wasn’t stellar, he was still an important part of the team and, in fact, there weren’t only technical reasons behind it. They were eager to get rid of him, and they’ll probably ask for the bare minimum to avoid a loss on their balance sheet to do it for good.
