Inter Milan Veteran Argues Mood Was Good Before Champions League Final Fiasco: 'Too Fired Up'

Inter Milan veteran Francesco Acerbi reflected on the team’s mood before last season’s Champions League (UCL) final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking to Sky Sport via FCInterNews, the 37-year-old admitted the players entered the Munich final in high spirits.

Despite contesting two finals in three years, Inter are still waiting for their first Champions League title since 2010.

Indeed, PSG demolished the Nerazzurri 5-0 in last season’s showpiece.

Moreover, it was the last game in charge for former manager Simone Inzaghi, who left the club in June.

Francesco Acerbi started as the leader of Inter’s defense in that match.

However, PSG’s lightning-fast frontline proved too hot to handle for the San Siro club.

In one of the most one-sided finals in recent memory, Les Parisiens trounced Inter to claim their first-ever Champions League trophy.

Though there was speculation that Inter were exhausted before the game, Acerbi suggests otherwise.

Instead, he insists he and his clubmates were mentally and physically ready.

“After the match, we looked at each other,” Acerbi said. “We weren’t even angry because it was such a game that ended almost as soon as it started that it was difficult to even process.

“I saw mental fatigue,” Acerbi added. “We did Bayern, Barcelona, we had to win against Lazio and drew, we were in Como with the league in play, waiting for Napoli…

“We had already wasted a lot of energy up to that point,” he continued. “Then, a week later, we played PSG and we had really built ourselves up for that match.

“After beating Bayern and Barcelona you think, ‘here we can win.’

“Many people said we were favorites, there was this pressure, the fatigue… and we arrived a bit drained.

“Then we faced a PSG so prepared and strong that they played the perfect game, and there was nothing we could do.

“You know, you’re 2-0 down, maybe if you score 2-1 in the second half… but we were too…

“We weren’t 100% ourselves, and if you’re not 100% against this PSG, you risk losing, and we lost, and rightly so.”

However, he refuses to let that disappointment derail his spirits.

“Enough of the shock of the final, because we are strong and experienced.

“That defeat hurts badly,” he added. “But we had months to think about it.

“And then when you start again, you have to reset and move forward, like in everything.”
