Simone Inzaghi admits that there is still a decision to be made at wing-back ahead of Inter’s Champions League round of 16 first leg against Feyenoord on Wednesday, but has revealed that one of two Nerazzurri centre-backs are in line to replace the injured Federico Dimarco

The Nerazzurri have an injury crisis at wing-back, which has left Denzel Dumfries as the only fit and available option on either flank. Dimarco is out, as are Carlos Augusto, Nicola Zalewski and Matteo Darmian.

That means that Inzaghi will either have to reshuffle his team, or select a player outside of their natural position to fill the gap at left wing-back against Feyenoord.

There had been suggestions that Inter would switch from a 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 to combat the Dimarco issue, but Tuesday’s reports claim that a 3-5-2 with a centre-back playing out at wing-back is the more likely scenario.

Two Inter options to replace Dimarco

Pre-match reports suggest that the left-footed Alessandro Bastoni, who often combines with Dimarco on Inter’s left-flank, is the most likely candidate to play at left wing-back on Wednesday, but Inzaghi has revealed that Francesco Acerbi also provides an alternative option.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday evening, Inzaghi said: “We know we have a bit of difficulty in a very specific part of the pitch. In addition to Dimarco, I would add Zalewski, Carlos Augusto and Darmian.

We no longer have players in that position, probably one of Bastoni or Acerbi will play there. But the principles of the game will not change. We are here to play a round of 16 match and we will do our best.”
