Tottenham are keen on signing Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney

While the North Londoners have gone a bit on the back foot with all the talks around bringing Hayden Hackney to Hotspur Way, given how Daniel Levy operates, this story is never out of the picture.

But now what will come as a massive blow for the North Londoners is that Hayden Hackney’s current employers, Middlesbrough, have accepted a bid of about £20 million, including add-ons from Ipswich Town for the England U21 international.

Now if this transfer goes through, it will be a club record transfer for the Tractor Boys, which shows how much intent they are showing in the transfer market as they aim to go back up into the Premier League once again.

But what comes as more important news for the Lilywhites faithful, Hackney has not agreed to join them for now…

Tottenham have been looking at Hackney for a while

The Lilywhites have had eyes on bringing Hackney to N17 for some time, with the scouts represented by the North Londoners tracking his progress along the recently concluded U21 Euros this summer. At one stage it did look like the North Londoners were genuinely considering him as a long-term option in the middle of the park under Thomas Frank. But as we suggested at the start of the article, the interest (at least publicly) cooled down, and the focus behind the scenes shifted to bringing Morgan Gibbs-White to N17.

But at the moment, the North Londoners have been looking rightly at bringing in a midfielder given that Gibbs-White has signed a new contract at City Ground. And Hackney fits the profile of someone who is young yet technically tidy and then goes on to fit in the homegrown quota at N17. Moreover, we saw how he was a genuine standout in the Championship in the last season.

Hackney, McAtee or Elliott?

There are also talks going on about bringing in someone like James McAtee or Harvey Elliott to Hotspur Way, given that Frank is looking to refine his midfield in the ongoing summer transfer window, and that is where Hackney also comes into the picture. He has a high ceiling, but Tottenham are now running short on time.

But that being said, Hackney has not yet given his green light over a transfer to Ipswich, and given that there are talks going on about the personal terms, complemented by the fact that the 23-year-old has been weighing up interest from the Premier League before making a final call. So if the Lilywhites are looking to make a move for him, now is the time, and the window is there, but given the interest in his signature, Levy needs to buckle up.
