Kylian Mbappe will miss Real Madrid vs. Manchester City on Wednesday, March 11, in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
Mbappe, 27, is recovering from a sprain in his left knee that has already kept him out of action for several matches.
The French striker has been struggling with this injury since late 2025, and despite recent progress, he is still not ready to feature.
The former PSG player missed the second-leg match against Benfica in the UEFA Champions League playoff and then sat out two consecutive LaLiga fixtures against Getafe and Celta Vigo. He has recently travelled to Paris to undergo more tests and then returned to Madrid to continue his recovery.
“In agreement with the club, he is undergoing further tests on his knee with the aim of optimising his follow-up care and preparing for his comeback,” representatives of Mbappe said in a statement, via BBC Sport. “No surgical intervention is being planned at the moment.”
Regarding this, Alvaro Arbeloa said, “It was a bit of a consensus between everyone, and we think the best thing is that he stops, that he recovers and comes back at 100%. It’s not going to be a question of days; it will be a bit longer, but I can’t say how long. Hopefully not too long.”
Real Madrid go into the clash with Manchester City after a difficult domestic run, having lost to Osasuna and Getafe in LaLiga before finally winning again against Celta Vigo, and with several other key players sidelined, including Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham.
The Bernabeu will once again be crucial as Los Blancos look to take a first-leg advantage before travelling to the Etihad Stadium for the return leg on March 17.
