Rodrigo De Paul is nearing his first appearance for Inter Miami . The Argentine midfielder arrives on a six-month loan from Atlético Madrid, with the potential to become a key piece of the squad. With Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba suspended for the upcoming match against FC Cincinnati, De Paul’s presence could soon bolster Miami’s midfield depth and defensive system.

Although known for his defensive tenacity, De Paul offers much more. He’s versatile—comfortable playing on either side of the pitch—and equally capable of breaking up plays and launching quick, incisive passes forward. But while Messi won’t be on the field Saturday, neither will De Paul.

Why isn’t De Paul playing against FC Cincinnati?

His paperwork is still being finalized. De Paul is currently waiting for his visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Until those arrive, he’s ineligible to play. However, Inter Miami has confirmed that the midfielder will be officially unveiled to fans before the match on Saturday.

Contract Details and Salary Cap Implications

The 31-year-old joins on loan through 2025, with an option to make the move permanent through the 2029 MLS season. Since Inter Miami has already filled its Designated Player slots, De Paul will not occupy one. Instead, he’ll be registered using MLS’s Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) mechanism, which allows teams to exceed the salary cap by up to $2.5 million for select players.

Luis Suárez already accounts for more than half of that TAM budget, meaning De Paul will use the remaining portion—at least for now. If Inter Miami chooses to make the transfer permanent in January, De Paul’s salary structure may be adjusted.

When Will De Paul Make His Debut?

The timeline for De Paul’s debut is uncertain, but it likely won’t take longer than a week. Once his visa and ITC are approved, he’ll be available for selection. His addition comes not only to strengthen Miami for the MLS playoffs, but also to support the club’s push for a second consecutive Leagues Cup title.
