Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson has already etched his name into the club’s history books after playing a pivotal role in leading the Lilywhites back to the promised land. The Welshman’s outstanding campaign last season – highlighted by his winning goal in the Europa League final – ended the North London club 17-year wait for a major trophy.
Despite all the backlash from the fans and the media for not making an impact at N17, the 24-year-old managed to end last season as the club’s leading goal-scorer in all competitions. His crucial goals in the Premier League and the Europa League showcased a different dynamic to his game, leaving Spurs fans in awe of his ability to adapt constantly.
Now, Johnson is determined to build on that success under Thomas Frank this season and continue his good form. The Wales international has already featured in a few games for the Danish tactician, scoring twice in the Premier League. Credit where its due, the prolific attacker has adjusted impressively to a new role on the left-flank under Frank, underlying his versatility and willingness to evolve for the team.
Tottenham claimed a vital Champions League win over Villarreal this week, with Lucas Bergvall’s deflected effort pushed into his own net by goalkeeper Luiz Junior. The own goal secured all three points for the Lilywhites, who had several players singled out for their standout performances. However, one player was forced to see his teammates perform well from the bench… Brennan Johnson.
Taking notice of that, Darren Bent backed the Welshman to struggle for regular minutes under Thomas Frank this season. Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent said,
“I like that Spurs aren’t just one-dimensional now. That’s the key difference – the game plan and the personnel. For Ange, someone like Brennan Johnson is perfect for the system he wants to play.”
The ex-Spurs player added,
“All of a sudden, Brennan, who did really well last year and scored some spectacular goals, isn’t a guaranteed starter.”
Darren Bent believes Tottenham have enough depth and versatility in attack to rotate players across the frontline. And it is because of this that Brennan Johnson will not be able to get enough minutes this season as other players are being preferred over him by the Danish tactician. Despite finishing as the club’s top goal-scorer last season, the Welshman finds himself battling for game-time in the early weeks of the new campaign under Frank.
If this trend tends to continue in the coming months, then there is a strong possibility that Johnson will consider his future at N17. The Welshman cannot afford to waste his time on the bench, especially with the World Cup coming up next summer. The 24-year-old will surely look to find his way into the starting eleven again at Hotspur Way, and play well enough to retain his spot till the end of the season.
