Jaap Stam remains one of Manchester United’s most iconic former defenders, with Michael Carrick’s uncertain future bringing the club’s managerial situation into sharp focus.

The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford in 1998 and quickly established himself among the world’s finest centre-backs.

His formidable partnership with Ronny Johnsen helped United complete their historic 1999 Treble, while Stam won three consecutive Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Following his controversial departure to Lazio in 2001, Stam enjoyed further spells with AC Milan and Ajax.

His subsequent managerial career included guiding Reading to the 2017 Championship play-off final, where they narrowly lost to Huddersfield Town on penalties.

He also managed Feyenoord and FC Cincinnati, gaining considerable experience across European and American football.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are facing another managerial crisis.

Carrick has overseen a disastrous start to the 2026/27 season, leaving United 17th in the Premier League.

Tuesday’s extraordinary 3-2 Champions League comeback against AS Roma finally ended a nine-match winless streak.

However, defensive disorganisation, questionable tactics and inconsistent performances continue to threaten his position.

Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha inspired the comeback, but one remarkable night cannot erase months of disappointment.

With Carrick’s future reportedly facing reassessment during November’s international break, attention has increasingly turned towards managerial alternatives.

Now, Stam’s involvement in another managerial search has emerged.

Jaap Stam in talks over new manager

According to Dutch outlet Vak Blauw, Stam is helping PEC Zwolle sporting director Gerry Hamstra search for a new head coach.

The Eredivisie club dismissed Henry van der Vegt in October following a disappointing start to the season.

Former United assistant Rene Hake was approached but rejected the opportunity.

Stam himself was reportedly mentioned as a possible candidate, although he has since been ruled out.

The 54-year-old joined PEC Zwolle’s Foundation Board in May, assuming responsibility for technical matters.

He previously managed the club in 2019, having also helped secure promotion as an assistant coach in 2012.

Alex Pastoor currently leads the publication’s managerial shortlist, with Wim Jonk and Alfred Schreuder also under consideration.

PEC Zwolle are expected to use the international break to assess their options, with Stam involved behind the scenes rather than pursuing the vacancy himself.
