It is not the kind of headline many expected to see this summer, but Turkish giants Beşiktaş have entered the race for Jadon Sancho. Reports emerging from Turkish outlet Sozcu claim that the Istanbul-based club has already made contact with Manchester United, exploring the possibility of signing the 25-year-old winger ahead of the new season.
For a player who just completed an up-and-down spell at Chelsea, this sudden approach from a club outside Europe’s traditional top five leagues comes as something of a curveball, and yet, it might be exactly the kind of fresh start Sancho needs.
Last season, the England international featured 42 times in all competitions for Chelsea, notching 5 goals and 10 assists. He showed glimpses of the talent that once made him one of the most talented young players in Europe, though consistency still eluded him. With his contract at United running until 2026, any permanent move would require negotiations, either over a transfer fee or possibly a structured loan with an option to buy.
Interestingly, Besiktas‘s approach is familiar. The club is now managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the man who brought Sancho to Old Trafford in 2021. The pair’s relationship might just be the key to unlocking this move.
Solskjær, now rebuilding his managerial reputation in Turkey, has reportedly expressed admiration for Sancho in private and believes he can still get the best out of him. It is no secret that the Norwegian always rated Sancho highly. During his time at Manchester United, Solskjær described the winger as “electric” and “a difference-maker” when he was playing with confidence.
Beşiktaş, meanwhile, is trying to bounce back from a difficult period. They recently secured the signing of Orkun Kökçü and appear keen to add some star power out wide. Sancho would certainly fit that bill. Turkish sources suggest Club President Serdal Adalı has kept the Sancho talks relatively quiet, only greenlighting the leak once discussions had advanced behind the scenes.
The real question now is whether Beşiktaş can pull it off. Sancho’s market value is estimated at around €28 million (roughly $32.7 million), and his weekly wages, believed to be in the region of £300,000, have been a barrier to many moves. That is a massive salary to give a player for a club like Beşiktaş, unless they convince United to subsidize part of his salary or Sancho agrees to a reduced pay package.
At the same time, they aren’t alone in testing the waters. Turkish rivals Fenerbahçe have previously shown interest in Sancho, especially now under José Mourinho’s leadership, although recent reports suggest Mourinho may not be entirely convinced about bringing in someone who’s shown no signs of consistency.
Juventus has also entered the conversation, with Italian outlets claiming a £21.5 million offer has been discussed. The Serie A side may offer Champions League football, something neither Beşiktaş nor Fenerbahçe can provide. That could give them the edge, especially if personal terms prove tricky elsewhere.
From United’s point of view, they are desperate to sell. Sancho has never fully worked out at Old Trafford, and after two seasons of loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea, there’s certainly no future for the 25-year-old at Manchester United.
Born in Camberwell, London, and raised through the youth systems at Watford and Manchester City, Sancho took the football world by storm when he moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2017. Over 104 appearances in Germany, he racked up 38 goals and 51 assists, convincing fans and pundits with his flair, creativity, and vision. That form earned him a big-money switch to Manchester United in 2021, but it never quite materialized into the dominant Premier League career many predicted.
Internationally, Sancho has been capped 23 times by England and scored 3 goals. He played a role in the Euro 2020 run to the final and was part of the squad that won the U-17 World Cup in 2017. At just 25, there’s still plenty of time for Sancho to reignite his career, but he’s quickly approaching a crucial point. One thing he might just have to do is take a pay cut.
A move to Turkey would not just be a change of scenery. It would be a gamble on both sides. For Sancho, it would mean stepping away from the Premier League or a top 5 league limelight to rediscover himself in a league where the expectations are different, but the pressure is still real. For Besiktas, it’s a swing for the fences, an attempt to bring in a once-marquee name who can lift the dressing room and draw eyes back to Vodafone Park. Crucial weeks ahead for Manchester United, Jadon Sancho, and Besiktas.
