Tottenham Hotspur sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday, bringing to an end a tumultuous period in which they both finished 17th in the Premier League and won the Europa League.
The Europa League triumph had seemingly strengthened the case for Ange Postecoglou to cling onto his job, but he has been relieved of his duties nonetheless, with the club pointing out in their official statement that the Premier League performances simply were not good enough.
While certain sections of the fanbase are startled with Daniel Levy’s decision to fire the Australian, many believe the decision was coming. A 17th-place league finish is atrocious and the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou was totally justified, despite him ending the club’s long trophy drought.
Gaffer, where to start.

Firstly, thank you for bringing me to this wonderful club that I now call my home. Your instant belief in me to not only sign me but make me the clubs vice captain & part of the leadership group from the get go is something I’ll always be thankful for.… pic.twitter.com/DrlWjX2o23
Ahead of the appointment of a new manager—likely to be Brentford’s Thomas Frank—players have taken to social media to wish Ange well. Pedro Porro penned a heartfelt tribute to the 59-year-old, thanking him for delivering one of the greatest moments in the club’s history. Now, James Maddison has also joined his teammate in wishing Ange.
From his official X account, the England international has penned a touching farewell message for the Australian boss, thanking the 59-year-old for bringing him to Tottenham and the belief he showed in his leadership skills from day one. He credited Ange’s winning mentality as the primary reason why Spurs were able to break the 17-year-long trophy drought and revealed that the departed gaffer made him a better human being.
James Maddison was not always a regular starter in his second season under Ange but delivered big moments in crucial games. An unfortunate knee injury did not allow him to participate in the Europa League final against Man United, but the fans cannot forget the playmaker’s crucial contributions throughout the European campaign.
The 28-year-old’s words show how much respect he has for Postecoglou, who gave the fans the night in Bilbao to cherish for lifetime. The ex-Celtic tactician has clearly left a huge mark on the Spurs squad, as evidenced by the constant pouring of tributes, well wishes and emotional messages.
With Ange gone, Thomas Frank appears to be the favourite to replace him at the North London club’s helm. Tottenham had a disappointing Premier League campaign last term, and they will hope to bounce back strongly potentially under Frank.
