Arsenal have built a strong reputation for scoring from set pieces, although they have not relied on them as heavily this season. Their performance against Everton served as a reminder of how dangerous the Gunners can be when they use their strength in dead ball situations to break down opponents.

Both goals in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory came from crosses, helping Mikel Arteta’s side secure an important result. Everton appeared prepared to limit their opponents’ threat from open play, defending with determination and making it difficult for the Gunners to create clear opportunities.

However, Arsenal knew they needed to win following Manchester City’s result, and they found a way to secure all three points. Their ability to exploit set pieces ultimately proved decisive, showing that they remain a significant threat in these situations.

Everton frustrated by Arsenal’s set pieces

Everton will be disappointed to leave the match without a point after putting considerable effort into their defensive performance. David Moyes’ side managed to restrict Arsenal in open play for long periods, but they could not prevent the hosts from capitalising on their set piece opportunities.

Arsenal’s ability to score in this manner is well known across the Premier League, and opponents understand the challenge of defending against their deliveries and movement inside the penalty area. Nevertheless, Everton were unable to deal with the decisive moments, and those failures proved costly.

James Tarkowski acknowledged that his team had been undone by Arsenal’s effectiveness from dead ball situations. The defender felt Everton had competed well but was particularly frustrated by the second goal, which made their task more difficult.

Tarkowski reflects on the defeat

Speaking to Premier League Production, Tarkowski explained his disappointment while insisting that Everton had shown enough quality to trouble their opponents.

“Ultimately two set-pieces have cost us. I thought we did alright. We created a few chances ourselves but it feels disappointing – the second one especially was a suckerpunch.

“The minimum is leaving everything out there. That is what the fans and the club expect of us. There was quality at times and we could have scored one. I’ve had much tougher games here but the three points doesn’t go our way.”

His comments reflect Everton’s frustration at failing to turn a competitive performance into a positive result. Arsenal, meanwhile, demonstrated that their set piece threat remains an important weapon when open play offers fewer opportunities.
