Chelsea is closing in on Borussia Dortmund Winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, and the finish line is in sight. The 20-year-old is reportedly just some time away from completing a move to Stamford Bridge, with personal terms already agreed and a seven-year contract ready to be signed.
According to multiple reports, including The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the two clubs are in the final stages of talks during their time in the United States, where Chelsea is competing in the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite some lingering interest from Bayern Munich, Gittens’ heart is already in West London. Now it’s just about the clubs finding common ground on the final fee, and based on how things are progressing, that agreement could be reached any moment.
This move feels more like a return than a leap for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Born in London, the winger spent part of his early development at Reading and even had a brief stint in Chelsea’s youth setup before heading to Manchester City’s academy. His talent stood out immediately, and Dortmund snapped him up in 2020 at just 16 years old.
Since then, Gittens has steadily risen through the ranks in Germany. He broke into the Dortmund first team in 2022 and had his true breakout campaign last season, scoring 8 goals and chipping in 4 assists across all competitions. His pace, directness, and dribbling have made him a nightmare for defenders and a dream signing for teams that play on the front foot. Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly a big admirer of Gittens. The Blues are rebuilding with a focus on youth, energy, and raw attacking firepower, and Gittens checks all those boxes.
Even though personal terms are fully agreed upon, the two clubs are still a little apart in terms of fees. Chelsea has already had two bids turned down, first around €35 million and then again at €50 million. Dortmund is standing firm on its valuation, believed to be between €65–70 million.
That might seem like a big price for a 20-year-old who is still developing, but Chelsea believes in his long-term value. According to talkSPORT and The Guardian reports, the club is preparing a third bid that could come close to Dortmund’s asking price, potentially including add-ons and performance-based clauses.
From Dortmund’s side, there’s growing acceptance that Gittens could leave this summer. Especially with Niko Kovač now in charge, Gittens hasn’t fit the tactical direction the new manager wants. That’s opened the door for the Blues to make the move.
For a moment, it looked like Bayern might swoop in and hijack the deal. The German champions have been monitoring Gittens for over a year and were reportedly in contact with Dortmund recently. But, their interest hasn’t moved beyond that.
Bayern is juggling several other transfer priorities and hasn’t matched Chelsea’s aggressive push. Gittens himself is said to be fully sold on the Blues. He wants the move. He sees the Premier League as his next big challenge and is ready to come home.
That personal commitment matters. In a summer where plenty of big-name moves are being delayed by hesitation or second thoughts, Gittens has made his position crystal clear. That is why Chelsea is confident this deal will get over the line soon.
If this deal gets done, Chelsea fans should be excited, really excited. Gittens is the kind of winger who brings fans to their feet. He plays with fearlessness, drives at defenders, and has the raw pace to change games in an instant. At just 20, he still has plenty of development to do on himself. Decision-making in the final third can be erratic, and he’s had some fitness issues over the past 18 months. His talent, however, is undoubtedly top-class. Think of him as a hybrid between young Raheem Sterling and early Jadon Sancho (the Dortmund version, not the Manchester United one).
He’s right-footed but prefers the left flank, which gives him that inside-cut threat that modern managers love. At the Blues, that means direct competition with Madueke and Pedro, or potentially forming a dynamic rotation under Maresca’s system. Chelsea is expected to offload players like Nkunku or maybe Jackson, too. Potentially, we could even see a late move for Noni Madueke, but there’s a real opening for someone like Gittens to make the position his own.
If Chelsea can edge their offer toward Dortmund’s demands of something in the region of €60–65 million with bonuses included, the deal could be finalized before the end of the week. With the Blues already stationed in the U.S., the hope is that the player can undergo his medical and be unveiled before the preseason starts. In a summer that’s already seen big names switch clubs, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to Chelsea could quietly be one of the most impactful moves. Not just because of what he is now, but because of what he might become.
