Jamie Carragher has compared AFCON to the UEFA Champions League after CAF stripped Senegal of the 2025 title and awarded Morocco a 3-0 win.

The decision has reignited debate around how major tournaments handle off-field rulings.

Carragher used the moment to draw a clear line between AFCON and European competitions.

Jamie Carragher compares AFCON decision to Champions League

Jamie Carragher compared the AFCON title reversal to scenarios in European football, focusing on how Senegal’s win was later overturned by CAF.

“Right, hold on a minute… so Senegal win the Africa Cup of Nations final, the crowd’s going wild, the players are lifting the trophy, and everyone’s celebrating, and now they’ve been told, ‘No, sorry, Morocco are the winners 3–0!’ Are you having a laugh?” Carragher said.

CAF ruled that Senegal forfeited the final after leaving the pitch during extra time, applying competition regulations to record the result as a 3-0 win for Morocco.

That sequence, a completed final followed by an administrative reversal, is what Carragher framed as difficult to accept.

AFCON vs Champions League debate raised by Carragher

The fallout has quickly shifted into a wider comparison between AFCON and tournaments such as the Champions League and the European Championship.

“I mean, this is exactly why I said the AFCON isn’t a major tournament. In Europe? In a Champions League final? In a Euros final? This would never, ever happen!

“You don’t hand out medals one day and then say, ‘Actually, change of plan the other team wins.’ Madness!” Carragher stated.

Carragher’s argument centres on consistency, suggesting that once a final is decided on the pitch, it should not be reversed after the fact.

CAF’s decision instead prioritised regulatory enforcement, meaning Senegal’s on-field victory no longer determines the official outcome.
