Jamie Carragher Rips Into £150M Alexander Isak Bid: 'Should Be Signing Mbappé For That Amount'

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is not happy with Newcastle’s asking price for Alexander Isak — especially if the buyer is Liverpool.

The Reds are spending more than ever in this summer transfer window. Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Hugo Ekitike are among the new names joining the first team. But there's still one missing piece: Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker has been one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League and has put Liverpool in difficult spots more than once. Now, the club wants him on its side — but Newcastle is playing hardball.

They’ve set a £150 million price tag, and Carragher isn’t having it. He believes that kind of fee should pay for someone like Kylian Mbappé. When speaking to Paul Scholes on Sky Sports’ Fan Debate, Carragher made his frustration clear:

“That kind of money, to me, feels like Mbappé territory. If you’re paying that, you should be getting Mbappé. That’s how big that number is.”

Carragher is still in favor of Liverpool signing Isak, but the numbers don’t add up to him — especially after the club just paid £80 million for Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. If Isak joins, he’s expected to start, which raises more questions.

"I look at it and think: you’ve already spent £150 million on attackers not long ago, and now this? It doesn’t feel planned. It feels… messy. And then there’s the whole thing with Isak — clearly throwing his toys out the stroller once Newcastle signed a striker and then Liverpool signed another one." - Carragher said.

Paul Scholes Shares His Take

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes agreed with his former rival. He believes Liverpool should go after Isak, but he admits the negotiations seem to be spiraling out of control. For Scholes, however, the intention is clear: Liverpool wants back-to-back Premier League titles.

“I get it — when you win the league, most teams tend to relax. But when we won the league, we went again. You build — you bring in more quality. You go from strength to strength,” said Scholes.
“Liverpool should be aiming to be the best in Europe again. That’s the ambition.
And if you're bringing Isak into the conversation, yeah — you’re talking about potentially having one of the best in the world.”

The summer transfer window closes on September 1st. If Liverpool, Newcastle, and Isak don’t reach an agreement by then, the Swedish striker will remain at the club for another season — or at least until the mid-season transfer window in January.
