Jamie Redknapp believes Liverpool could still hijack Antoine Semenyo’s seemingly imminent Manchester City move.
Antoine Semenyo’s expected move to Manchester City may not be as clear-cut as it once seemed. The Bournemouth striker was widely reported to be on the verge of a £65 million switch to the Etihad.
But Jamie Redknapp believes another Premier League heavyweight might still get involved. Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp suggested Liverpool could yet make a late move for Semenyo, even as reports circulated that he was set to finalise his transfer to City.
Antoine Semenyo was reportedly heading for a medical after activating a release clause in his Bournemouth contract.
The forward, who’s scored 10 goals in 20 appearances this season, capped his time on the south coast with a stoppage-time winner in Bournemouth’s 3–2 victory over Tottenham. But Redknapp believes the deal isn’t over the line just yet.
“Everyone thinks it’s a foregone conclusion… but I’m not so sure. I’m hearing Liverpool have come in. If you look at that position with Mohamed Salah and what happens with him, we don’t quite know.
“A player like Semenyo, who’s shown he’s a match-winner, fits that profile.”
Redknapp stressed that he wasn’t breaking news, but hinted there could still be a late twist before the deal is confirmed.
All reports have suggested that Antoine Semenyo will join Manchester City, with a signing being completed as early as this week.
However, if Redknapp’s comments are to be believed, Liverpool could intervene at the last moment and lure the forward to Merseyside.
It would be a massive coup for Liverpool, as they would not only strengthen their own squad, but also hinder their rivals.
Whether Semenyo ends up at Manchester City or Liverpool remains to be seen, but Redknapp’s comments suggest there could still be more twists to come in one of the window’s biggest stories.
