Jamie Redknapp urges Arne Slot to stick with one man at right-back for Liverpool

Arne Slot had more to consider at right-back after Liverpool were beaten by a last-minute goal from Chelsea.

Coming off back-to-back losses, the Reds appeared to have fought back for a point at Stamford Bridge. But Estevao Willian’s late goal left them with three straight defeats.

One of the main challenges so far this season has been stability at right-back, with no one managing to secure the position consistently.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit led to Jeremie Frimpong joining from Bayer Leverkusen, and he was expected to share playing time with Conor Bradley. That rotation has taken place, and Dominik Szoboszlai has also filled in at times.

So far this campaign, neither Frimpong nor Bradley has really locked down the starting job. Szoboszlai has even stepped in when needed, but nobody’s truly made it their own yet.

Jamie Redknapp believes it’s time for Slot to make a decision and stick with one player moving forward.

Slot picked Conor Bradley to start at right-back against Chelsea. The Northern Irishman seems to be the preferred option when fit, but he had a difficult afternoon trying to contain Alejandro Garnacho.

Bradley ended up with a yellow card for a reckless challenge, and with the risk of a second booking looming, Slot took him off at the break. Szoboszlai moved into defence, and Florian Wirtz came on in midfield.

The switch did not help Bradley’s confidence, but after the match, Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports that he still thinks the 22-year-old can make the position his own.

“I really want to see Conor as that out-and-out right-back. He’s obviously had injuries, it hasn’t been easy for him.

“Frimpong played in a back three for Leverkusen, he wasn’t an out and out right-back and you can see the way Liverpool play, he’s struggled so far this season, it hasn’t been easy for him. Then you go with Szoboszlai who’s arguably been the best of them all, but I still don’t think that is the answer.”

Given how things ended between Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool, fans ignored just how important he was to their set-up.

The club had stability at right-back with the former No.66 holding down that position week in and week out. Losing that kind of consistency was always going to cause problems.

The situation has not been helped by injuries either. Frimpong has had his setbacks while Bradley has also spent time on the sidelines, which only adds instability back there.

According to Redknapp, even with everyone healthy, nothing replaces what Alexander-Arnold brought.

“What Liverpool will have looked at, when you lose Trent who is irreplaceable, who is out there?

“There are not many right-backs who are easy to buy. There are centre-backs who play right-back, Hakimi would be the best of the bunch but he’s obviously not going to leave where he is. There’s not many right-backs out there, it’s a very difficult position to trade.”

“They’ve got problems at full-back, it’s apparent. They’re missing Trent.”
