Tottenham stunned the football world this summer by securing the signature of Mohammed Kudus on a long-term deal. The move was particularly surprising given that Spurs had not engaged in transfer dealings with West Ham United for years, owing to their fierce rivalry. Signing the Ghanaian attacker therefore came as a shock to many pundits and fans alike. Yet, just a few months into the season, the 25-year-old has already established himself as a fan favourite at N17.
Kudus has made a sensational start to life under Thomas Frank. The prolific winger marked his home debut for the north London club with two assists on the opening day of the Premier League season. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength, consistently delivering impressive performances as the campaign has progressed.
Kudus currently sits at the top of the Premier League charts for both assists and successful take-ons, clear evidence that Tottenham’s decision to sign him ranks among their smartest transfer moves in recent years. The Ghanaian also netted his first goal for the Lilywhites in their most recent fixture, scoring a stunning winner to secure all three points against Leeds United.
There is little doubt that Mohammed Kudus possesses all the attributes required to become a world-class player in the coming years. That is exactly why many rival clubs are envious of Tottenham’s success in landing him. One can only imagine how dangerous he would have been had he joined a top side such as Liverpool or Manchester City instead.
Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant, in fact, admitted he had been eager to see Kudus move to Anfield before Tottenham swooped in to complete the deal. Speaking on the Wildcards podcast (via TBR Football), Pennant said,
“Kudus. I wanted Kudus when he played at Liverpool with West Ham and there were rumours about Kudus and other teams. That’s like he’s strong, he’s quick, he’s effective, works hard, work rate back as well.”
Pennant was impressed by Kudus’s performance against Liverpool last season and remains a huge admirer of the winger’s pace, work rate, and impact on the pitch, qualities that make him a strong fit for any top club. The ex-Arsenal player also wanted the Reds to go all in for his signature before the Ghanaian made the switch to N17 in the summer.
The onus is now on the 25-year-old to build on his brilliant start and translate it into consistent performances throughout the season. With Spurs competing on all four fronts this year, Kudus will play a pivotal role in ensuring Thomas Frank’s side continue to shine whenever the team need him most.
