Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has loosened the pursue strings to ensure new boss Thomas Frank has a squad capable of competing in the Premier League and Champions League in the upcoming campaign.
Spurs spent £55m to sign Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United, while Joao Palhinha has arrived on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich with our club having an option to buy. The Lilywhites have also turned Mathys Tel’s loan into a permanent deal from Bayern Munich.
However, Spurs are far from being done in the transfer market, especially after a serious knee injury sustained by James Maddison. They have now entered the market to sign a No.10 to fill the void created by Maddison’s ACL injury in Thomas Frank’s squad. Additionally, the club bosses must also sort out the contract situation of a few players who have entered the final year of their deals.
Rodrigo Bentancur is one of them. The central midfielder has been a part of Tottenham since January 2022 but is yet to fulfil his potential that he showed at Juventus thanks to his injury issues and off-field matters. And as his contract expires on June 30, 2026, the Uruguay international’s future at White Hart Lane remains up in the air.
Earlier in the summer, reports claimed that Atletico Madrid were keeping tabs on Bentancur’s situation at Tottenham. No formal talks or offer has been tabled thus far but the La Liga side have shown an interest in the 28-year-old, who could not establish himself as a regular starter under former boss Ange Postecoglou.
In contrast, the Uruguayan’s importance has grown substantially at the club since Frank’s arrival as the new head coach. This has been evidenced by the Danish tactician starting him regularly and handing him ample minutes during the pre-season games.
However, Spurs remain in danger of losing him on a potential free transfer in 2026. This is because Bentancur will be able to negotiate a pre-agreement with an abroad club as soon as he enters the final six months of his existing contract at N17. Keeping that in mind, Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham believes tying the central midfielder should be a priority over the coming months.
“When Frank came in, he mentioned Bentancur almost immediately,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I think there is a concern that we need to get his contract extended because if you’re talking about backing the manager, this is somebody that Frank wants around.
“You can see that from his team selections, another start against Bayern. In the first half, he was probably our best player, along with Mohammed Kudus, in terms of just keeping things ticking over against the really aggressive, high-pressing Bayern midfield.
“He’s five months away from being able to negotiate a pre-contract. Atletico and others would happily sign him on that or wait for him to come for free in the summer. So, it’s being cautious about that, and getting his contract extended is an absolute priority.”
While he has endured his fair share of injuries over the years, Bentancur became a crucial player in Spurs winning the UEFA Europa League last season. If he stays healthy, the Uruguayan could become one of the first names on Frank’s teamsheet in the upcoming campaign. The signs have been promising so far as he has featured heavily in the pre-season games this summer.
Going by Frank’s team selections, the South American appears to be a player the Tottenham gaffer likes. With Atletico Madrid perhaps waiting to pounce on the opportunity to secure a pre-contract agreement in January, Tottenham must quickly extend Bentancur’s contract.
