Jorge Messi addresses possible Lionel Messi return to Barcelona

Lionel Messi apparently knows what he wants. Whether or not he'll get it is unclear.

"Of course, he [Messi] would love to return to Barcelona," Jorge Messi, Lionel's father and agent, told reporters on Monday, according to outlets such as ESPN and Sky Sports News. "I would like it too. We will see."

Messi played his last match with Paris Saint-Germain over the weekend and is set to become a free agent once his contract officially expires at the end of the month. Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez made it known late last week that "the doors are open" for Messi to return to the Catalan club this summer even though Spanish football writer Guillem Balague has repeatedly insisted that financial issues similar to those that caused the superstar to leave Barca as a free agent in the summer of 2021 make such a fairytale homecoming "impossible."

ESPN notes that Jorge Messi was spotted entering the home of Barcelona president Joan Laporta earlier on Monday.

"We spoke the other day, but there's nothing concrete," Jorge said about discussions he'd had with Laporta.

Messi reportedly has an offer on the table from Saudi Arabia that would pay him around $400M annually to feature for Al-Hilal. Well-known world transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Sunday that striker Karim Benzema is leaving Real Madrid to join Saudi club Al-Ittihad via a three-year deal worth a whopping $643M.

Reuters (h/t ESPN) mentioned on May 3 that Cristiano Ronaldo is making "more than €200M ($219.98M)," including commercial and sponsorship agreements while playing for Al-Nassr.

Inter Miami have targeted Messi for years, and Balague said on Sunday that the Major League Soccer club presented an offer that includes "less money" and is a "more complex deal" than what the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner received from Saudi Arabia. The MLS contract also has "intertwined deals with big brands like Apple and Adidas."

The Athletic reported Monday that Messi's "ideal scenario would be for a final decision to be made in the coming week" and that it is "seeming less likely (Barcelona will) land Messi as time goes by." The all-time great who turns 36 years old on June 24 owns a property in Miami, and it's believed that's one reason why the MLS club co-owned by David Beckham is "seen as a possibility" for Messi even if it can't financially match what he'd earn in Saudi Arabia.
