Real Madrid could be set to hijack Manchester United’s pursuit of a Premier League midfielder.

Jose Mourinho is urging Los Blancos to move first for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, as reported by AS.

The 21-year-old has quickly become one of the most talked-about young midfielders in England after an eye-catching campaign at the London Stadium, following his £38m switch from Southampton last year.

Despite West Ham’s relegation, his performances have stood out, making him one of the few bright sparks in a difficult season.

That form has inevitably drawn attention from across Europe, with Manchester United among the clubs already exploring a possible deal.

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are also believed to be monitoring the situation closely, while United have even begun early discussions with West Ham over a potential transfer.

However, any move is complicated by the Hammers’ valuation, with the club understood to be demanding around £80m for the midfielder.

United’s interest also comes at a time when they are assessing multiple midfield options, with other names such as Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson also under consideration, while Atalanta’s Ederson is currently viewed as the most likely early addition following an agreement between the clubs.

The situation has now taken another twist in Spain, where reports suggest Mourinho has personally recommended Mateus Fernandes to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

The Portuguese coach is said to be pushing Madrid to act ahead of United and their rivals, with Perez also preparing for a key presidential election that could influence major transfer decisions at the Bernabeu.

Bruno Fernandes has also reportedly suggested the midfielder to United’s recruitment team, adding further intrigue to a growing transfer battle.

If Perez is re-elected, Madrid could accelerate their transfer activity, especially with plans reportedly in place for a major statement signing this summer, setting up a potential three-way Premier League and La Liga fight for one of England’s rising midfield talents.
